Between taking care of a new puppy and finals, I haven’t had much time to focus on learning new stuff… but I got through all my kanji today! Hopefully they stick. One question though for the veterans or intense studiers of this site…
Does anyone know the etymology behind 斤, specifically the “bread loaf counter” definition? I find it extremely odd and funny that Japanese has a counter for how many bread loafs there are.

I don’t know the exact link, but 斤 is also used in traditional Japanese measurements, representing 1 きん, about 600g (Wiki page, mass is sect. 5) This is a bit heavy compared to modern loaves, but traditionally bread was denser than it is today. This is my guess.

I mean… we call it a loaf… 7 loaves. This is actually one of those things we DO have a dedicated counter for.
