The best way to study something is to try to teach others.
Following this way has helped me a lot in my career and I feel it will also work for learning Japanese.
Which is the reason for me to start this post.

Currently I am learning Japanese expression at an intermediate level which is mainly focused on writing reports/manuscripts and giving presentation. So the posts will focus on that for a while.
I will be happy if someone gets value out of what I am doing, and will appreciate your comments or questions.

Let’s begin.

When writing manuscripts, or reports the most basic rule it to not to use です／ますform and instead use だ／である form.
であるform is preferred over だ form when writing manuscripts or formal reports.

Let’s see how to change です／ます to だ／である

Noun：
Nです → Nである／だ。
過疎化は大きな問題です。→ 過疎化は大きな問題である／だ。

あれは間違いではありません。→ あれは間違いではない。

それが課題でした。→ それが課題であった／だった。

それが原因ではありませんでした。→ それが原因ではなかった。

How to change sentences ending in adjectives from です／ます form to だ／である form

na adjective ： follows the same rule as noun

使用方法が複雑です。→ 使用方法が複雑である／だ。

これは適切ではありません。→ これは適切ではない。

解決するのが**困難でした**。→ 解決するのが**困難であった／だった**。

容易では**ありませんでした**。→ 容易では**なかった**。

i adjective: remove the です at the end.

北海道は夏が**短いです**。→ 北海道は夏が**短い**。

その差は**大きくないです**。→その差は**大きくない**。

彼の発言は疑わしかったです。→ 彼の発言は疑わしかった。

今年は積雪量が多くなかったです。→ 今年は積雪量が多くなかった。

…and finally, the verb.

When writing manuscripts just end the sentences with dictionary form of verb and all will be good.

Examples

資料を集めます。 → 資料を集める。

～については扱いません。→ ～については扱わない。

データを分析しました。→ データを分析した。

調査を行いませんでした。→ 調査を行わなかった。

Other sentence ending forms that should not be used when writing manuscripts (in left) and their replacements (in right).

• 事実なのです。 → 事実なのである／だ。

• 明らかでしょう。→ 明らかであろう／だろう。

• 検討してみましょう。→検討してみよう。

• 参照してください。→ 参照してほしい／されたい。

• 提出しなければなりません。→ 提出しなければならない。

• 他の方法がありません→他の方法がない。

• 行われるんです。→行われるのだ／のである。

• 事実なんです→事実なのだ／なのである。

• いいんじゃないでしょうか。→いいのではないだろうか／であろうか。

Other rules when writing manuscripts.

1. Don’t use この～ like この論文～ or この実験～ etc

Instead use 本論文～ 本実験～ etc.

2. Don’t use particles like ね、よ、わ。
   For example. 説明しますね。should be written as 説明する。

Next lets look at list of words that are often used when speaking but should be avoided when writing reports/manuscripts.

We start with adverbs that should not be used and their replacements.

とても・すごく → 非常に・大変・極めて

全然 → 全く

ちょっと → 少し・多少・若干

全部 → 全て

どんどん → 急速に・急激に

だんだん → 次第に・徐々に

たぶん → おそらく

いちばん → 最も

もっと → より・更に

絶対に → 必ず

今 → 現在

That’s a lot of adverbs to avoid.

This was actually a super helpful list because I’m still very much at the beginner level, but I’ve been working on translating recaps for pro wrestling shows (here’s an example of one; click the button under 大会ハイライト to see it), and your list helped clarify to me some of the word meanings and choices that I see in the recaps.

The wrestlers quoted in the recaps tend to use the more informal spoken language on the left, and the recap itself tends to use the words on the right. I have flash cards for a bunch of the words on both sides of this list in the various SRS that I use, but I hadn’t realized there was this kind of distinction there with the usage.

After adverbs lets look at conjugations that have no place in your manuscript.

でも → しかし・だが

けど → しかし・だが

それで → そのため

それに → その上・さらに・また

だから → したがって

から・ので → ため

とき → さい

こんな～・そんな～ → このような

たくさんの～ → 多くの

だいたい → 約

色々な → 様々な

みたいに → のように

じゃあ → では

しなきゃ → しなければ

しとく → しておく
