How the F&*% do you remember that 研究室 is laboratory and 研究所 is research lab?!

And how do you remember that 見返す / 見返る is “to look back at” and 見送る is “to see off”?!

室 - room -> a single room -> laboratory
所 - place -> a whole building -> institute (Lab is like the 5th meaning. Learn it as institute)

見返す / 見返る is “to look back at” 返 … return, when you return to do something, you have to look back(wards)

見送る is “to see off” 送 also means “send”. In English, a farewell party is also known as a “send off”. To see off someone is to say goodbye to them. I suggest adding a synonym to say “to send off”

… and I’ve decided that the way to remember them is to post a West Wing gif. Leo, promise me I’ll never confuse these again.

This guy’s walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can’t get out.

I still don’t have an effective way of telling the difference between 申 and 由. Obviously if I see them in context it’s not so bad, but when they come up as kanji reviews, I can never remember which is which.

Ok, so the central stroke goes lower in 申 and it is used in humble language where you are lowering yourself. Maybe that’ll help.

逃がす as in 取り逃がす

Ahhhh, these drove me crazy! I think it was 6 months before I even realized there were four separate items.

Here’s how I finally got a handle on them:

Meaning is not so bad… there are only two:

  • If it ends in る：intransitive meaning (“to escape”)
  • If it ends in す：transitive meaning (“to let go”)

For reading, just remember that there are actually only two kanji readings used, and each meaning pair has one of each:

  • に
  • のが

There is no “の” reading!

If you remember that, the okurigana of the two you are having trouble with won’t be able to confuse you:

  • If you see 逃がす、you know it isn’t のがす because there is no の reading. So it must be にがす. (逃す is のがす)

  • if you see 逃れる, you know it isn’t にれる because に is the reading of the one you know well (逃げる)… so it must be the other reading のがれる.

Hope that helps… very hard to explain clearly, but that is what worked for me.

To escape
逃げる に げる
逃れる のがれる

To let go
逃す のがす
逃がす に がす

edit: and when you see 取り逃がす just remember that the 逃がす part is the same as the stand-alone vocab.

I know there is 遅い, but no おこい.

Maybe I should remember… Servant is angry to the core? And I fear the sound of the saw, and everything I want to do became too slow?
