I’m doing great in my Japanese studies. Not only am I on course to level up on Monday. I also found the perfect Japanese exercise video.
And all that in glorious 360p 240p
Still going strong. The main challenge is starting the reviews when you see a 100+ number. It’s easy when there’s only 20-30, but 100 requires a little more self encouragement.
Luckily most vocabulary I’m currently learning seems very useful. It also helps that more and more I can see a–twisted–logic in how the reading / meaning relates to the Kanji.
Level 22 should come this afternoon (~8 days for level 21). Let’s see how I feel after all the new vocab items drop ![]()
Congratulations on the level up

This morning I should have leveled up my level 22 Radicals & Kanji to apprentice 4. But the review queue was too big to clear before work (200+)
I should have cleared my review queue before going to bed yesterday, but I was tired.
I want to clear the queue now, but work is getting in the way.
This evening I have time to clear the queue, but I’ll be tired…
So easy to fall behind and let it go. There’s always a ‘but’. I hope I can find the motivation today to just DO it.
Still cruising through level 22, with the level-up coming up on Tuesday. Kept a lot of the vocabulary waiting until the weekend, but it seems to work for me to focus on the Kanji and harder left-over vocabulary first. And then when the final Kanji of the level are apprentice 3-4 to then focus on introducing new vocabulary to reinforce to current level Kanji.
With level 20-22 just about done I did about as much in this ‘stint’ as I did in September / October of last year (level 17-19)
I’m currently still motivated to keep the ball rolling until level 30. But reaching level 25 would feel like a win already tbh. These levels feel very good for building useful vocabulary. I get the sense that starting to read would be possible. I’m just stalling to get more vocab under the belt in the hopes I can struggle a little less when I begin my reading journey in earnest. I learned to focus on just one thing at a time. One-dimensional progress is way better than a burn-out trying to focus on too many things at once.
Congratulations on the level up

Still doing remarkably well with WK. I have to remind myself to take it a little easy as some big review spikes are starting to hit. A relic from my journey to quickly eradicate the 2600ish review pile. Half of it got burned, but a decent chunk got knocked down to Master which seems to be hitting now. Which leads to forecasts like this:
I’ve also opened MaruMori semi-regularly over the last week. Haven’t done any actual lessons, but I did prune some of the vocab lists there to get rid of all the known items. (MaruMori does sync with WK, but if words are spelt without kanji, or in a minor variation it doesn’t seem to get marked as known).
I’ve mostly been trying the mini-games. The crossword in particular at N4 / N5 level is semi-doable. Half the vocab is still unknown, and it’s hard to recall without a WK kanji prompt. But it’s fun, and I’m learning a little as a bonus!
Level 24!
The review pressure remains high, but manageable. I get a lot of satisfaction out of clearing the review queue on a daily basis. Level 30 also feels like an achievable goal, not too far in the distance. I think that helps to keep my motivation high.
I’m considering the Yotsubatsu book club. I ordered a bunch of mange previously and Yotsubatsu is among them. It’s also one of the easier ones to get into from what I can tell.
Just before that thread opened I started reading my Dragonball manga though. (The original Dragonball Kanzenban edition). I’m familiar with the cartoons, so it’s nostalgic to see it on paper.
I only got through one page yet. It took me hours to read work it out fully due to some fun ancient distance units, unfamiliar words, ‘katakana sounds’, handwriting style… and of course my very rudimentary grasp of even N5 grammar. All of this presents difficulty. But not so much that I don’t want to continue. I finally get the sense that it’s just about doable.
I might go for a thorough read / translation process with Dragonball and still join the Yotsuba bookclub but only do a ‘cursory read’ through so I can keep up without too much of a time investment. I think there’s merit to both ways of reading, and that way I can do both.
Congratulations on the level up ![]()
I would recommend joining the ABBC since the manga seems quite hilarious ![]()
Three years ago or so, they rereleased the Dragon Ball manga in bigger volumes (in German) and I went ahead and read them and enjoyed every bit of it (the manga is goated
).
Here’s a Sakura to help you with reading the manga ![]()
