Love the redesign and the new font, awesome work!

I have one issue with synonyms though. I noticed that if I want 父 and 父親 to be synonyms, I have to go to both their individual pages and add the synonyms twice. Is there a way to link the words automatically (ie to only have to perform one operation instead of two or more)?

I totally recommend anyone to start using KaniWani if you haven’t decided yet. You will be sorely disappointed with the retention of your knowledge from WaniKani.

I believe that KW makes the brain turn some kind of a switch, since even stuff I had huge trouble with in WK I can suddenly remember even after just a few tries. And also actively use. Definitely a necessary addition if you want to be able to use your knowledge actively (and I would say even passively).

Now I’m combining it with Bunpro for the whole SRS package :\>

Currently no way to do automatic linking.

It wouldn’t be tooo difficult, but we’d have to add in a number of checks not present on current synonym submission.

Off the top of my head…

1. is the synonym an existing WK vocab word
2. has the WK word been unlocked on WK yet
3. is the WK word synced and unlocked on KW (not hidden, not level locked etc)
4. is that synonym already present (from previous synonym adding)
5. sure there’s other stuff not coming to mind that would have to be protected against

You would also have to get it 100% the same as the WK word.
For example my IME auto-completes おもいやり to 思いやり but WK has 思い遣り so adding _my_ version of this synonym wouldn’t auto-link in this instance (if I didn’t double check the WK word first and correct it).

Anyway, it _is_ possible, but at the moment adding another synonym when the second word is incorrect in the quiz is less work for me than implementing auto-linking. Apart from the initial `boy, girl, dad, mum, to change` - I don’t find there’s _thaat_ many synonyms to be honest. Most words have enough difference in nuance it’s better to add a meaning synonym on WK or pay close attention to the parts of speech. I’ve actually been removing some synonyms now since we added the PoS. Today I removed 要求する from my 求める since it now says “ichidan verb” in the question.

I’ll take a shot at implementing it and see if it’s easily viable or not.

It was always my impression that KW populated the prompts with WK user synonyms, which would be very helpful for people to differentiate similar words (for instance, adding “not はやし” on WK as a user synonym to have the prompt for 森 show it when it appears for review on KW.

It doesn’t currently, at least, based on my test just now, but could it?

It is supposed to do that already and at least in the past it definitely worked, see my screenshot. I haven’t tried it in the last couple of days and as far as I remember, there sometimes used to be a bit of a lag until the synonyms showed up.

A recent change is that they also support removal of synonyms:

> Hey all, Previously we never removed stale synonyms from wanikani, e.g. if you added a synonym on Wanikani, once it was ported to Kaniwani, it became permanent. This patch now correctly removes synonyms which no longer exist on the Wanikani side. This will take about 12 hours to propagate

So for reference, any synonyms could take ~12 hours to sync.

We have millions of vocab entries which we can’t afford to pound WK’s servers constantly checking if anything has changed. So we have rolling syncs that occur roughly at least once every 12 hours - so you can get updates/newly unlocked WK words appearing on KW about once a day.

If you’ve added a synonym and it’s definitely been 24 hours, then there may be a problem.

On a side note, if you add the synonym during your WK lesson - I think that will be pretty much guaranteed to appear with your first KW question (since the sync that receives that word from WK, would already have the synonym bundled with it).

Can you explain a bit more?

Does the “x” button do nothing?
Is there an animation?
Does the question rotate?
Is it the keyboard shortcut that’s not doing anything?

What’s your expectation, and what’s actually happening/not happening?

[Edit: unless you’re talking about lessons, in which I should probably _remove_ the ignore button from completely. There is no penalty for getting a lesson wrong, so ignore effectively does nothing in lessons.]

[Edit2: yep, gonna remove ignore from lessons since there’s no point ignoring lessons anyway]

i used the keyboard shortcut until now and the bar turns yellow and tells me the answer was ignored but the item still shows up as wrong after i am finished reviewing.

i wanted to provide some screenshots and it worked now for some reason. I’ll report back if it doesn’t work after some more reviewing.

First time i closed my browser without leaving the kaniwani tab open since before the update, maybe it had something to do with that even tho i can’t really imagine why it would.

well, after 200 Reviews it seems like some ignores worked while others didn’t. For example I confused to hand over (渡す) with 手渡す ignored that and it still showed up as wrong after i was done and it didn’t get burned. It also downranked 延期する, which i chose to ignore cause i always get the prolong/postpone words wrong. Some other words like 強力 which i also got wrong and ignored was correctly marked as correct after i was finished reviewing.

I always use the keyboard shortcut to ignore and the bar turned yellow and told me the wrong answer was ignored.

What did you mean by “does the question rotate?”?

Thank you in advance for helping me with my problem 🙂

By rotate I meant after showing ignore animation it moves to the next question, which I assume it is doing.

I just intentionally got every answer wrong multiple times in a session of 8, ignored them all, and they were all correct by the end of my session.

Are you pressing enter to go to the next question after using the ignore shortcut?
You should just be waiting for it to advance by itself after the animation completes.
I might need to block all other user action while the ignore is occurring, since it’s intended to be a convenience action of ignore this → return to queue → next question.

These are only incorrect answer ignores yeah?
(ignoring **correct** answers will forcibly mark the answer as incorrect - this is for kanji writing practice people).

You’re ignoring **each time** you make an incorrect answer for the same word?
One ignore won’t carry over to a second incorrect answer.

I can’t really think of how they might be showing up as incorrect in the summary, if they haven’t in fact been submitted as incorrect.

The only other thing might be if you’re leaving the review page open, letting it timeout, reloading it, continuing with reviews throughout the day without ever re-entering the quiz via the button on the summary page - your summary will be an accumulation of all those sessions/reloads. So it’s possible you could answer a word incorrectly without ignoring, then correct… then it resurfacing 4 hours later, this time incorrect + ignored and correct - it’ll only show once in the summary, with the status when it was first added (the incorrect answer 4 hours earlier).

Perhaps I should force people to the summary page if they timeout instead of allowing a reload then and there.

After some more reviewing i think i discovered the source of the problem. The ignores never counted when my impatient ass pressed the ignore hotkey and enter right after. If i waited for it to rotate by itself the ignore was registered just fine.

Haha, no worries. At least it brought that situation to light.
I’ve written an update to block [enter] or “\>” submissions as soon as ignore has been initiated.

It should be active now, you can return to being impatient if you wish.
Kinda like pressing a traffic light or elevator button multiple times even though it doesn’t speed it up 😆

Hehe thanks! 🙂 Funnily enough I never press elevator buttons or traffic light buttons multiple times, but the items I get wrong are usually those that have the same(-y) English meaning and multiple Japanese words, so I just rattle them off in my head and enter one of them xD

Additionally, don’t know if anybody already posted this, but you can avoid the input going to romaji instead of hiragana on mobile by pressing n twice, since the problem only happens after n.
