Great! I think this will add a lot of usefulness to the site and close a huge fluency gap.
I don’t mind him spending his time on puzzle games. It’s puzzle games which have “eGoooott” as one of the answers that I take issue with.
Uh, what? That’s how they announce it? Not even an actual tweet on Twitter, but a reply to a tweet on Twitter? I sometimes rant a bit about Niantic making official Pokemon Go announcements on Twitter when they’ve got a perfectly good announcement system actually built into the game itself, but at least they actually announce things on Twitter.
I need to know the context for this
what does it mean?!!
What doesn’t it mean? It has so many uses!
The context can be found here, though. Just to warn you: there’s a lot of it.

there a search feature…but be warned…it’s a rabbit hole you don’t wanna go down…
That is good to know although disappointing to hear. If they decide to to share this information on an individual basis in reply (replies?) on sns and not on their own website, I can’t say I’m too surprised not many people know. I’m also not surprised that textfugu showed up in relation to etoeto before a tweet with less than 30 views did when I was researching it.
I think that’s a good suggestion.
They really have their work cut out for them when it comes to fitting the vocab on this site to getting people to “comfortably” being able to read whatever they want to read
Interesting. This is actually one of the things I like about the vocabulary on WK.
Seeing 4 different words with the same kanji, and the flip side of that coin, 4 similar English “meanings” with different kanji, really helps me understand the nuances of the underlying kanji, even if it only triggers me to research independently. I’m much more likely to understand a word that I come across in the wild but isn’t taught on WK because of it.
Also, tbf, the WK team has been adding an awful lot of context beyond the sample sentences. The “patterns of use” aren’t everywhere yet, but they are showing up more and more.
As someone who has lurked on the forums and read nearly every drama thread I can find, thank you all for your continued hard work ![]()
But on a serious note, I think this update can be positive, but the opt-in method would make it so I see little downside (other than perhaps muddying the waters on the goals of WK). If it isn’t opt-in, it wouldn’t affect me much (the vocab released the other day took all of 5 seconds to complete), but I do understand that some people feel more strongly than me about how they might be affected if the kana only program expands in the future.
I think WK has played an important role in my Japanese learning because for a while I just didn’t study kanji at all, but nowadays I find myself spending much more studying time reading LNs and doing my mined Anki decks. I would encourage people (especially people completing the latter half of WK) to start consuming more native content that they enjoy, even if it slows down their WK progress.
If WK’s new goal is to train people to read, then I hope they consider carefully how big a task that is and whether it is worth pursuing. Knowing some kana vocabulary can be very helpful, but it is a far cry from being able to read and understand most texts.
In summary: more learning opportunities good, opt-in recommended, read stuff to get smart

Okay. We’ll see how it goes.
That said, I would suggest creating a new category for these words instead of listing them as radicals. “Kana” might do it and you can color it グリーン ![]()
They are not listed as radicals. It sounds like you’re probably using a third-party app that has a bug.
Not to mention the other seventeen people…
Or are you implying she’s the only person who’s won precisely one Emmy, one Grammy, four Oscars and two Tonies?
And third place on American Idol
This is so unsatisfying. I want details
Wasn’t it in development for like 6 or 7 years? Did they toss all of it? Are they ever going to release anything? What is that development team doing now? Is this why WaniKani is all of a sudden getting weird attention? I hate that we’ll likely never get details on this or any official notification ![]()
Oh Eto Eto,
I wish you’d please let me know,
What happened to you.
btw everyone, looks like Flaming Durtles didn’t break with this update! You can do all reviews, including the kana-only words, they are just treated like radicals (blue background instead of purple). Which makes sense given they are functionally almost identical
It’s probably still a good idea to switch over to the new version (Smouldering Durtles) since that app’s supported, but at least this means it’s not an immediate concern ![]()
imo, seeing words out of context might be helpful, but for consolidation. I have to recall the context myself, not necessarily in WaniKani or a dictionary. Learning the first time might be different.
On repeating (with SRS), there are probably benefit both ways, but there would still be ones that context can’t just be recalled.
Out of context also as a benefit of looking into more details, precisely why learning Kanji is helpful.
Agreed.
99.987% of the time I just SRS stuff “out of context” in Wanikani – I know it or I don’t, move on.
There are two exceptions in my case where I really pay attention to the extra context provided (and often want even more):
-
Initial lessons for a vocabulary word. I generally read everything on a lesson page for anything unfamiliar.
-
“Hey, wait a minute!” moments during my reviews. This happened for various reasons. I might have simply noticed I’ve been missed an answer too many times and then take the time to learn more. I might realize I’m confusing two visually similar characters. Or I might think, “Hey, wasn’t there a different word that meant the same thing but used different characters?”. Or maybe, “Hey, why are there so many ways to say basically the same thing – what’s the difference between all of these?” In all of these cases, I’d also take the time to review everything on the individual subject’s page (as well as anything related that I had questions about).
wait so everyone’s concerns about that just didn’t happen
Well I guess keeping this as the same api version makes sense now considering the most popular third-party android app didn’t explode with it.
