In my head I’ve at least been pronouncing it to rhyme with “form”. Or possibly “forum”, actually. How’d you manage “squirm”?

Its interesting to me how many people seem to have struggled with the name ‘Jourm’
Apparently in the original-original mnemonic it was Joe(seph Stalin) so Joe the farmhand is like a fusion of old and new
Maybe its just what I got used to but I liked Jourm, the ‘ou’ sounded more suitable for じょう than ‘Joe’ which is a shorter sound to me (Identitcal to the ‘jo’ in Joanne)
That said I’m not relying on mnemonics as much anymore so this isn’t an improvement or a downgrade for me

So, long-time Miyazaki collaborator 久石譲 uses “Joe Hisaishi” as the romaji (as it were) version of his name. To people saying “Joe” is too short a sound, are all y’all telling Joe Hisaishi that he’s pronouncing his own name wrong?

Funny, yesterday I also had 常 as a lesson and went to check other じょう words by checking on 上. Same thought process lol. I almost made a topic before I found the WaniKani team had already addressed this in a post. Rest in peace Jourm. It was hard to remember at first but it’s going to be weird adjusting now.

No, but I think in mnemonics designed for memorising a sound (esp one separate from じょ) its not bad to overemphasise the difference
That said apparently people were seeing a character name and getting confused by what “Jourm the farmhand” could possibly refer to, so I guess its worth changing to a name people might be more familiar with
At the end of the day nitpicking is useless in the face of what people can understand
You can’t learn to memorise if you’re being tripped up
And I get tripped up on mnemonics about ‘uni’ as I read it as the shortened form of ‘university’ (You-knee) but its actually a novel switch to using the Japanese word ウニ meaning sea urchin, which takes me off guard bc 99% of mnemonics are a forced English pun

In general it might be worth just changing to a word which has a regular standard pronunciation and is known to most people. Names and characters are always tricky. In order to build up the necessary emotional charge for the mnemonic to work, you need to explain who Joe is, why should we care about them, what’s their personality, etc.
Meanwhile, most people have seen ducks or geese or…

Japanese people pronouncing foreign words and names incorrectly because they (or rather: their educational system) shoehorn them into their syllable system instead of learning how to actually pronounce them according to the respective alphabet? Yeah, you’re right, that definitely can’t be it
