I suck.

I officially suck. Please take time to tell me how much I suck.

I was mean to get caught up today, but once again I got totally caught up in just watching election news all day and looking after my son and so only got as far as doing my kanji lessons. Which meant intentionally skipping vocab which is, repeat after me, a bad thing to do!

If I want to keep my level ups under 8 days and get my 0/0 this month, I’ll have to do start getting into hose lessons and doing those reviews. I’ll try and just do five or ten reviews at a time whenever I get a second of peace tomorrow and hopefully I can get down to 0. I’m not sure about vocab lessons, that might have to wait till I can focus more, when I’m back on campus for work on Monday morning.

With all the lack of sleep lately from staying up for election stuff and my son having a bit of a snotty noes and so waking up in the night a few times, I’m feeling pretty exhausted which is why I can’t focus, as far as I can tell. Oh well, election has been called now for Biden (thank goodness) and so hopefully I can start sleeping sounder and calming down a bit.

Good luck with your catching up sessions! Sleep deprivation makes life a bit more difficult to navigate, so I hope you’ll get some time to rest!

(if the image isn’t descriptive enough, i just realized you could abbreviate the threads name to JoJo kinda like the JoJo’s bizarre adventures series)

Oh, I see what you did there!

Yes, one could condense the name down to JoJo: ASL - which make me think I’d find it entertaining seeing an anime with sign language translation.

Thank you to all those who told me I suck and thank you for the lovely words from those of you that followed up with something nice, even though I deserved to be told I suck. I didn’t post an update yesterday because I was feeling guilty that I still hadn’t done my reviews and I still hadn’t done any lessons, but I’ve caught up and I’m back at 0 reviews again, whooo!

I was woken rudely at 7am by my son this morning and then had to get ready for work an hour later. I was on campus by 8:30 and then got on with my day moving stuff around, doing stuff I had to physically do on campus, etc. I think found out that the team whose office we were using (mainly developers who can work from home where we can’t all the time) want their office back from Wednesday. Good old departmental politics.

So I had to move my machine, my three monitors, all the stuff I’d taken from my usual desk to this temporary desk, and move it back to another room adjacent to my usual office (which I can’t share due to maximum occupancy) to set it up to work from there. Two annoying things about this, the first being that if that office I’m moving to now was available, why couldn’t I have just gone in there to begin with?

The second annoying thing being that the next time I’d be due to be on campus, I’ve got booked off as holiday, so I’d not be in then. Following that week, we’ll be moving to the quiet time schedule and I’ll not be due back on campus till Christmas week, when the campus is closed. Since when we’re on the quiet time schedule, I can work from my usual desk again, if they’d just waited until next week to want their office back, I could have moved my stuff back to my regular desk and then not been on campus again until the new year, but no, no such luck.

So we’ll get to the end of this week, and I’ll have to move my computer and stuff once again, back on to my regular desk. On the plus side, I left all my extremely tidy wiring on my desk exactly where it was and used spare cables, so I can just slot my stuff back where it goes and I only have to move it across the corridor, not accross campus on Friday (like I did today).

In other grumpy complaint news, I’ve got an annoying nasal kind of cold and that makes me miserable. Nothing worse than having to wear a mask any time you’re not at your desk AND having a blocked nose -_-

Today has been an okayish day, still feeling kinda crappy, but muddling through work and everything. Also, I LEVELED UP! Thank goodness, I’ve managed to keep my 7-day streak going as well as 0/0, which I hit earlier upon doing 200 reviews and 98 lessons in one sitting, because I was dogged about hitting the 10th level of 0/0.

I’ve got 95 reviews left to do now, but I’ll be leaving them until I get to work in the morning since having a cold is taking it out of me and I need my sleep to recover my energy for another day of work tomorrow, which is my ticket day, joy. On the plus side, it’s just three days till the end of the week and then a week after that till my two weeks off that I’ve booked for the start of the new World of Warcraft expansion launch.

I hope everyone is keeping well ^-^

I have been doing badly lately :frowning:

I have 245 lessons and 672 reviews.

Too much time tinkering with computer stuff, not enough time doing reviews.

I SHALL RECTIFY THIS!

I shall also return to usual study log posting, I’m sorry it’s been a week, I didn’t realise I had failed to post that many. I deserve more β€˜you suck’ gifs.

Hi Joeni! Your story resonated with me! (and your post inspired me to post!)

I grew up in the fringes of some Japanese culture. My mother nearly married a Japanese man (before my time), so by the time I was born - it was normal for toddler me to prefer sushi and seaweed snacks vs. spaghetti. My family is a mix of German/Russian/Polish - and my parents decided to try and encourage me to learn German at an early age.

My grandmother encouraged me so we could converse together! I joined German clubs, took all the language classes in school. Took all the German classes in college. And then my Grandma died and I discovered… she actually spoke polish, and she only ever spoke broken German.

My German skills were greatly under utilized and now as a grown up adult, I rarely access those skills as I have no interest in them.

As a child and young adult, I loved watching Japanese cartoons, I loved the food, my Dad convinced me to learn to drive by bribing me with trips to the GIANT Japanese market place, I found I enjoyed some Manga, I found I always had a few albums from Japaneses musicans, and I too also love the visual story like Games and I am frustrated when immersion is broken due to poor translations.

I visited Japan last year, and fell in love with the country and people. And I was disappointed that I hadn’t found the time to pick up the language. My experience with German led me to believe that I am terrible with languages, and whenever I expressed interest in learning Japanese - I would usually hear the β€œIt’s the hardest language to learn, good luck”. I was always convinced of failure before putting in the work.

COVID hit. I was on a walk on the last day of nice weather, rocking out to Ningen Isu, and I was thinking about the Japanese word Kaizen - constant improvement. And a realization sort of hit. The only one stopping me from learning Japanese is me. I’ve spent the bulk of this year, reading, working, cleaning, and just - if I put in a little time every day, my Japanese will improve. I deserve to believe. I deserve to try. I deserve to be a better version of me.

Then I threw myself into it like a fly zooming into your front door. And you know what I realized? I have a shot at this. Due to my affection for Japanese culture, I can immerse myself. This language will enrich my life, versus sitting like half used paint cans in the garage of my mind (That’s my German for you). And much like my horrific fear of driving, I can bribe myself with a vacation to Japan to get those wheels rolling.

I’m still really early in my learning, but I couldn’t sleep last night because my Genki text book is being delivered. And now, here I am. My brain is half awake as it isn’t yet seven. Thank you for sharing your story and your struggle and I am here to say that I believe in you! Little bit of effort every day. Little constant improvements. You’ll get to a better version of you and it will enrich your life.

This is a lovely way to put it and I strongly believe that this is the case ^-^

Thank you, I find myself believing in myself a little more just from hearing that!

Oh and this is your first post, so thank you so much for taking the time to write. In return, please accept my humble welcome post:

Thank you, Joeni! For sharing these resources! I have been eyeing the scripts, but my enthusiasm as of late has turned to making some flash cards. The house centipede I drew for big, eyes me and judges me for spending 10 minutes on him.

I’ll make it a goal of mine to get a script downloaded and to read at least one guide for WaniKani. You even kindly provided links and the most adorable gif!

Thank you for sharing! Now I must bathe in coffee and get myself ready to face the giant new lesson pile. I just crossed into Level 2 and I am READY.
