So, A bit of background before moving forward, yeah?
I started Wanikani on Dec 6, 2016. and to this day I have 99 days of study. Part of that is because I made…Mistakes. The last day of that spurt was January 17th 2017. And in that little over a month I did 32 days of actual reviews, and managed to power run to level 5 with 600 some odd reviews needed. And I fell off. And over the course of the next 8 years, I’d come back and using the free membership, so no new lessons, try to work through the reviews. And I’d fail, within a week I’d have bounced again.
So I’m starting again. Or to say I started again a little over a month ago with a 33 day streak. Making this more study days than i did when I started. I have started to prove to myself I can do this. And I wanted to try to keep a track on this.
when I came back I decided not to reset. I just…sat down did the reviews. Whatever didn’t stick, I took out my little notebook, wrote it down. Something to help me concentrate on the kanji, the meaning, how to say it. It’s helped. Not perfect, but works for me. I’m improving, every day.
Hopefully this helps to. Just to keep my head straight kind of deal.
Welcome back! Study logs are a great place to ramble and give ourselves a bit of accountability and to remind ourselves that even a little bit is progress!
I certainly plan to ramble. I am probably still a bit away from leveling up, as I’m not looking to overwhelm myself again, just yet. really just working through the new lessons that apparently cropped up for lessons 1-4. lol
I’ve been through this many times – sometimes I did reset, sometimes I didn’t… The road to level 60 took me much longer than it should have, but in the end I managed to reach the destination! And if a cat as clumsy as me can do it – then you definitely can as well!
May this time be successful for you and best of luck with your studies!
Okay, so I haven’t found a tracking site that does what I want without also wanting to look at 8 years, so for now, it’s just my excel log, that I wish i started sooner doing tracking. In case you’re wondering, yes I did do reviews on missing days, I was too lazy to add them to the log. I’m going to need to go back and figure out what i burned in this time.
And while this is condensed, I do have the data of radical/kanji/vocab and even the different Apprentice/Guru levels. My rhythm will probably just posting these kind of updates and my growth at studying better than 10 years ago. Like reading the mnemonics actually helps and I should have been doing that.
So still working along. Yesterday was a good day, finally breaking into more lessons of level 5 and officially taking three tries to remember what 当 means. But with steady work and practice I’m sure I’ll somehow get there.
The funniest thing I’ve noticed is that I will come across a word that I’m unsure of, but my brain immediately pronounces it, 立てる & 立つ for example. I see those and 立 becomes た with no thought or attempt to recall. This does that magical little trick of me immediately doubting myself because I then think, “I don’t know this one so well that I can just KNOW the reading. It must be something else.” But I’ll just sit for a bit, not think of anything else, put た and it’s right.
I distinctly can remember this happening a few times. and on other kanji/vocab. And one day I’ll just have to accept I may be learning things.
Also was mildly frustrating to do my first big lesson dump of 5 after so long and it be a third of just vocab with no kanji: コンビニ, デパート, すみません, いいえ, それ, あなた
Yesterday was less productive than I had hoped, and definitely didn’t advance the new lessons as quickly as I’d like. BUT just means I get to try again today, and I still have all the other amazing progress I’ve made.
Other note. I can not explain but I think my new favorite vocab is 三日月. I don’t know if it’s just 日月 right next to each other. Or that it means crescent moon. Or even that it uses づき, which only took me a few tries in the lesson quiz to get remember. But I like it. It scratches an itch in my brain.
Yes I did some reviews over the weekend, just didn’t new lessons. so no new kanji/vocab to scratch my itch. Just slow work.
Until I find a site that can show my history in a way I like, I’ll stick with my excel, but for anyone curious. Thank you very much for letting me just post and blab.
A New Day, some new progress. While I’m steadily moving forward with Wanikani again, I’ve been looking at how can I better round out learning Japanese. Sure learning Kanji and some vocab is great, but practical use so I don’t lose it.
I’ve looked at bunpro.jp and will try that for a bit, see how I do. I tried looking at one of the book clubs, and saw I can’t read yet, so discouraging.
Okay. I missed a day posting, but didn’t miss reviewing.
It was an abysmal day reviewing. Whatever hot streak I had went down the tubes. But that happens. Ups and Downs. Still better stats than a month ago, and better than when I started learning. (Why yes, it has been longer than a month since I came back. Today is 42 of my streak.)
I’m still feeling bunpro out, and doing terrible, but I have been lazy with my note taking there.
But what I need now is some japanese listening/watching I can do while I work on projects. With christmas coming up, I’m making these presents so having the background noise to just get used to hearing japanese would be really great.
I think I got that right. According to another widget I’ve studied 109 days, in the last 9 years. Pretty telling almost half of them where since I came back. A commitment to learning? Hope So.
I’m also mad at myself for fucking up 天. I was so close to burning it, but spent a good 30 seconds going, wait, or is that arrow. And I sided with arrow, and now I’m just annoyed with myself.
I forgot! I wanted to mention. while digging up Japanese Podcasts, I found Kowabana, which is a podcast that has Japanese creepy pasta/urban legend reading. It’s in English, translated from Japanese, but I’ve enjoyed it for my horror fix.
And with a month and a half in the bag, we can see the Enlighten grow! Sad news, i completely boffed 一本気 by first completely missing it’s meaning then writing いっぼんき, then いっぽんぎ. I was very confident I was correct both times. So, yeah. I managed to send that down a few levels.
Happy Thanksgiving! Day 48 in my streak, 51st day since my return. and 1st day of level 6! that’s right after 3,233 days, and 19 hours, Level 5 is behind me! Now onto bigger, better and hopefully in a few weeks I will be on level 7!
we had a similar journey, i started in 2014 and only have 65 days of study
but i restarted a month ago and have already reached level 7 today - so we are moving along nicely ~
