**Japanese with Manga** is a project of mine to explain Japanese with annotated examples from manga.

The site provides **explanations** with examples from manga for various aspects of Japanese:

## Grammar

Grammar explanation pages give basic information on the grammar. Nothing too thorough, and it won’t replace using a dedicated grammar resource. The page’s goal here is to have at least the minimal amount of information necessary for the grammar.

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/b/9/6/b9667b902a7871ceb6c8a5cb314f55caaab004c9.png)

Then examples from manga show the various situations where the grammar is used:

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/5/8/f/58f0d2347c7093b67823921dd0f69de185c0f79a.png)

## Vocabulary

I’m still working out what I want the vocabulary pages to be, but for now they focus on various individual vocabulary words or groups of related words.

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/1/5/9/159e4a66b8b061aebff49aa741f05359a7175591.png)

## Kanji

These explanation give basic meaning information, then arrange words using the kanji into categories, with manga examples.

## Idioms

This section is my favorite, although it has the least content. The idiom explanation page explains the idiom, as it often means more than the sum of its words, and gives one or more examples from manga.

The manga **examples** are the star of the site, and the reason I created it.

Resources for learning Japanese tend to give examples in the form of single sentences with no greater context and no visual aid. Incorporating a manga panel helps work around this for me.

## Panel

The core of the example page is a manga panel:

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/d/5/d/d5d87a97e3eaa69aefcae12c1919a47965567e5d.png)

## Explanation Link

The panel includes a lot of information to learn and know, but each example was added to the site for a specifc explanantion page, linked to here.

## Context

The context gives the relevant background necessary to know what’s going on in the panel.

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/4/9/d/49d566f8e0db0cd71dea8c398b95e298e5110d7a.png)

## Dialogue

Even though you can click/tap on the panel image to see it at full size, sometimes furigana is still too small to read, or maybe not present at all. A transcript of the dialogue is provided, with full furigana. (A site-wide option lets you hide furigana until you hover/tap the text.) English translaitons are also available, although they require a click/tap to reveal them.

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/e/8/1/e819d99e1f8af70be3d92f856cf61a8cdbe9b1ff.png)

## Challenge

Every example comes with an optional challenge. Before revealing the English translation, challenge yourself first to see if you can understand the Japanese dialogue. Clues are available, and the answering is via a sparse multiple choice, so it’s not too difficult.

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/d/d/e/dde9563c4eedfcc070e1e1c3552b5de20eeb622f.png)

The purpose of the challenge to get you to focus on the different parts of the dialogue that make up the whole, and think about what they convey. It’s the thinking part that helps make the material more memorable, versus simply clicking a button, reading a translation, moving on, and forgetting it.

## Key Points

These further break down the dialogue, covering different aspects. This helps give exposure to the various grammar appearing in the dialogue, as well as tricky things not covered in traditional education material (such as dropped particles).

## Vocabulary

Most examples don’t have this yet, but I’m working to build up a vocabulary list for each example:

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/f/b/f/fbf137fa4d3d62bcab32d3f7c9f16eebeda18273.png)

## See Also

Each page ends with links to any grammar, vocabulary, kanji, or idiom explanation pages that help explain parts of the dialogue.

Hopefully there are others out there who can benefit from this format as much as I do!

Wow! You have obviously put a huge amount of thought and work into this! It looks like a very useful resource! I could also see many people wanting to comment with an example of their own or request a word/idiom if you decided to put a discussion or comment section on the page (though this could lead to more moderating and work for you in the long run).

A very minor suggestion for this post is to put a second link to the page at the end as, for me at least, I’m much more likely to click after reading the description.

The main thing that prevents a discussion section is that the site is completely static with no database backend.

For submissions, most explanation pages have a link for this:

![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/1/b/d/1bd1066bcdb78423d16d1cf678eaeda34ac115e0.png)

(Not everything has a link, and as I improve/restructure various page layouts, sometimes the submit is lost. There’s room for improvement there.)

Since there’s no database backend, submitting an example does require clicking a download button, then getting the saved file to me (with Discord as the only listed route at this time).

I’ve considered adding an upload option that would utilize the database I have on another site, so it’s just a matter of 1) add image, 2) write out the scene context, 3) list out who’s talking, 4) click/tap to submit. If there was interest in submitting examples, I’d definitely get the process more streamlined.

The nice thing that would come with examples is every piece of grammar, vocabulary, and kanji within the panel becomes potential material for multiple pages. I currently have 84 kanji pages, but that number would increase rapidly with a steady submission of examples.

Do you mean the link to the example page at the top of a example page?

If so, I’ve just now added it to the top of the “See Also” section at the bottom, so it’s accessible there as well.

If you mean something else, just let me know.

Thanks! Yes, I meant this about the link.

As well, thank you for your detailed explanations about the site creation and its static nature. I’m reasonably tech-savvy with applications as I teach online, but in terms of building a website, I have no clue 😆 I am also not among the people who use Discord and would contact you for more details that way.
I’m sure this website will be useful to many people, and it will be helpful to people who are reading the manga mentioned on your website through book clubs past or present. Have a great day!

_Japanese with Manga_ has a submission page where you can submit a manga panel with context and minimal other information, and I may add it to the site.

There was just one small issue with this process:

![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/d/f/c/dfc0c95039d70851eb7fbd1c183b7727646aeb1b.png)

It required leaving the site and using a separate application to send a submission.

_This is no longer the case._

Now you can fill out the submission form…

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/2/3/2/2321a72fe23b223b9be1f4ed59a46f3ef7e788e8.png)

…then hit the Submit button, and (if there are no issues) it’s off to my inbox.

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/e/3/6/e36874a56c853825bc919446fb9c570deeed5921.png)

If I choose to add it to the site, it’ll get a transcription, translaiton, challenge question, list of key points, and vocabulary list added. Any part of the dialogue that overlaps with an existing grammar, kanji, vocabulary, or idiom page, it’ll get added that as well. (And it may appear on future pages.)

The site currently has over 530 examples across about 60 series. There’s always room for more.

Very cool concept! Took a quick look but ran into the following issue where text is being overlapped on mobile no matter the scroll position:

 ![IMG_9444](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/wanikanicommunity/original/4X/5/f/9/5f9937a61ed7651f3d22b6342516679ac219c790.jpeg)

Me being a desktop-first developer (very much desktop-only) in an age of mobile certainly works against me at times.

Thanks for letting me know about this; it’s fixed now!

May require a hard refresh to see the updated CSS. (I should probably look into the modern way of forcing a CSS refresh for users; way back when it was to add something like ?v12 to the end of the link to the CSS file, so the older cache isn’t loaded.)
