Japanese Sentence a Day Challenge

Don’t ask me how I remember this, but I’m pretty sure it said 人がいっぱいいる. Now it should be a lot easier to parse

I ORIGINALLY thought it was ぱい but it’s suuuuuper small!!! Then ichi.moe assumed the いい was connected and meant “good,” with no results for “ぱ ,” so I changed it and it said ばい indicated emphasis!

Okay this makes sense!!! Yes, the first page has her father seemingly trying to get her attention and he says おーーつ!! and I assumed that was his pet name for よつば ??

Yes I’ve noticed this already and I’m glad you just confirmed it!

@yamitenshi , you are like my WK community guardian angel!

Haha, no, that’s just him going “Oooooh!” :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Are you sure you didn’t have another typo in there? When I enter 人がいっぱいいる it parses the sentence correctly:

https://ichi.moe/cl/qr/?q=人がいっぱいいる&r=htr

The sentence just means “there are a lot of people” with the connotation that いっぱい doesn’t just mean “many” like (おお)い does, it really means a lot. Assume it’s pretty packed with people there, in Yotsuba’s eyes at least.

HAHA that is funny how you remember that!!! but it still parses the same, with no result for ぱい and making いい mean good. Perhaps いい is good and it’s ぱ?

Never mind I forgot the tsu was small!

HAHAHA oh man! So glad to know this.

YES I forgot the small tsu!

clearly this means squid octopus crab, not “a lot” - clearly

Yeah, that kind of typo will throw off any translation software :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: It doesn’t even parse 人がいぱいいる - just gives no results for ぱ and る and assumes it’s 人外◯いい◯ essentially. When I change that to 人がいばいいる it does give me the result you were describing. I can see how that’s confusing :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Strange results like that are a pretty good sign you’ve got a typo somewhere. Ichi is pretty good at parsing sentences, and especially a manga like よつばと! won’t contain a lot of (if any) grammar it doesn’t get.

EDIT: I do notice we’re in the wrong thread :joy: questions like these are better suited to the Short Language Questions Thread or the Short Grammar Questions Thread

Thank you for confirming this! The font is SO small that the rendaku melds into the actual kana and even though I have great near sight I could not figure out which rendaku it was! But my first assumption was correct  I have to be very careful to look out for those little rendaku marks!

Also great to know! I will do a little more “investigating” next time! Either way if I was somewhat close to what she meant in the text I’m happy!

OOPS - I had no idea these threads existed - SORRY EVERYONE!

最近、Duolingoを始めたり文法をもっと練習したりしているのに、文法を少し忘れてしまったと思う。そして、Genkiにある何か文法の説明はちょっと間違う気がする。例えば、Genkiによると、「ようになる」という文法のポイントはゆっくり変化することを強調するけど、他の説明によると(例:jlptsenseiのページ)、そのポイントによって能力を達成することなどは強調された。

Lately, despite starting Duolingo and practicing grammar more, I think I forgot grammar a bit. Also, I feel some of the grammar explanations in Genki are slightly wrong. For instance, according to Genki, the ようになる grammar point emphasizes a slow change, but according to other explanations, through that point achieving a certain ability (to do something) is emphasized.

I think I successfully managed to butcher English grammar in this one :joy:

問題ではありません。

EDIT: And I confused としてwith によって. Nice

えっと…それは知らない文法じゃないならちょっと間違いかも  「する」の仮定法の否定は「しなければ」んだから。それは「勉強死ねば」だと思うな :joy:
