Japanese in one year?! - Not your usual study log

When I saw there was a new post, for a second I almost thought NeoArcturus had returned. I hope they’re doing great wherever they are. Seeing someone progress at the pace they were felt oddly reassuring and it would be a shame if for whatever reason they had to put language learning aside.

Appears at the very least this will have been a humbling year. IIRC his post from a year ago said he wanted to get 60 in a year and native like fluency in 2-3.

To be fair, it is what we all wanted at one point :joy:

Although I will say if Neo does come back, he shouldn’t take missing the level 60 in one year target as too discouraging - it was a lofty goal and language learning is a marathon, not a sprint. The same also goes for anyone else who has maybe dropped off in language learning and considers returning to it.

Indeed!

Anyway, we all wish @NeoArcturus さん best of luck and hope he would return ASAP love2

Yeah, it would be for the best. At the end of the day it’s all up to the person in question and their mindset. The typical routes are
a) get discouraged
b) make excuses
c) take the lesson, examine what went wrong, and use that knowledge moving forward

c is the preferential one by far, but sadly a and b are often walked. I had a similar experience with quitting japanese and being humbled quite a bit around the time I was 17 as well. I also happened to think quite highly of myself and my ability to learn much like Neo seems to, so it was quite the shock. But, thanks to that I was able to grow a lot, become a lot more successful with my studies, and have a lot more fun doing so than I ever would have imagined. Failing at japanese, in that sense, might have been the best thing thats ever happened to me thanks to path c. Hoping he gets as much out of it as I did. Unless hes like…secretly in hermit mode and already N1 level or something.

Same here
When I joined, I was doing a level per week, but then, at level 37, I burned and spent almost a year just contemplating the ever-growing pile of reviews, trying to muster the willpower to do them… Ended up doing a reset, which I should have done from the start… That wasn’t my last reset either… Heh, I joined in 2016 and only reached level 60 a few months ago…

However, I think I have managed to find my pace, so that my Japanese studies are going slowly but steadily. Of course, I am a very clumsy cat; others can be much faster and still feel comfortable, but my point is – it’s impurrtant to find one’s own pace trunky_rolling

And 2 days later! released!

MaruMori - Learn Japanese

These exams are designed to closely resemble the actual JLPT, so each section has the appropriate time limit, as well as type and amount of questions. The scoring is also true to the official format.

We currently have five full exams each for N5 and N4, featuring the vocabulary, grammar, and reading sections. (We’ll have a separate release for listening in the future.)

I’m sorry, @NeoArcturus さん、is everything alright?
You haven’t been playing chess lately – so much so that I’ve just won by timeout… Which is not fair, because you were clearly winning and would have most likely won, if it wasn’t for the timeout… I’ve sent you a remeowtch request trunky_rolling
Anyway, I really hope you are alright and would return both to this forum and to the chess! love2
You are a very strong player! :chess_pawn:
