Oh yeah, that was a very weird plot “twist” that made no sense, as if it’s accepted that you could from the outside look at a case, one you weren’t even part of and be like yeah the judge was right or no, totally crooked judge. And then if you thought the judge was honest, then just showing your true feelings about the matter would win the case. I liked the content of the passionate technical speeches so I ignored that when I watched it, but now that you mention it, it did momentarily strike me a weird and now it seems like a lazy plot resolution.
Your digressions were interesting, I hadn’t thought that much before about which side of a legal proceeding can call witnesses etc
I for one didn’t mind the way they handled that “twist”… it’s just in line with most of what happens in the show
As for the questioning of defendants by the prosecution/plaintiff’s attorneys - I’m of the opinion that this should be allowed in any circumstance
Sure, the prosecution should have the opportunity to question the defendant. What concerns me is the defendant being called as a witness for the prosecution. This isn’t “please have the defendant take the stand”, but rather “I’m calling the defendant to testify against the defendant”.
Well if the defence doesn’t put them on the stand, the other party should have the ability to do so.
It doesn’t have to be all hostile, though: that’s where the judge would intervene, ensuring the prosecution doesn’t badger the witness.
But I haven’t played Ace Attorney, dunno how wild these things get there
I bought it on Steam a while ago during a sale but never got around to it. Recently I wanted to give it a try but I see it’s listed with no voiced dialogue in any language… ugh not cool. I ought to learn to not do blind impulse buys
Yah, it’s text only, aside from 異議あり! and 待った!
Just finished Shitamachi Rocket. It was entertaining enough, but I don’t think I need to see the second season. All the cackling villains having their little backroom chats got a bit old. Though I will say that the casting director seems to excel at finding actors who I just want to punch in the mouth whenever their characters start speaking.
It kinda felt like she was only there to say emotional things, though. (Though, she was played by Asakura Aki, who had a recurring role in the Asadora I translated. She also played the lead role in Ghibli’s Kaguya Hime.)
What about those two receptionist ladies who were made to feel part of the team by being issued completely different uniforms?
Yeah… a bit of a disappointment that role. But there’s another lady making an entrance later, with a more important part to play in the story.
Haven’t seen that one yet, but it’s on my watchlist
Not part of JFF, but speaking of films where women take the centre-stage:
A few days ago I watched Kore-eda Hirokazu’s Our Little Sister / 海街diary which has no less than four leading ladies (well, one’s a teenager but still).
Loved it to bits!
It’s maybe not his best feature, doesn’t have quite the best dialogue, doesn’t tackle the most complex moral conundrums (as opposed to some of his other films), but… it just works on the whole, and is right now my favourite from his repertoire Still got a couple to watch, though…
Interesting to hear from you both about the future of this series, and it’s been enjoyable discussing along the way. I’ve only made it through episode 4, that looks like as far as I’ll get. I hope we get a bit more time next year, they seem to use different formats and times every year.
JFF+ has been re-branded JFF Theatre (which apparently requires registering again), and to celebrate, they’re streaming five more films starting August 1st. Unfortunately, I’ve seen four of them, and have no interest in watching the fifth. That said, Happy Flight is a good film, and I’m thinking I might watch it again.
Oh thanks for sharing!! I haven’t seen any of them, I’m super happy
Ooooh thank you! I watched the first half of the Sumo documentary but ran out of time unfortunately. Now I can watch it again and finish it! (highly recommended if y’all haven’t figured that out by now )
Nice, thanks for letting us know!
Thanks for letting us know!
interesting… now they don’t mention countries/regions anymore. I wonder if they’re opening it worldwide, at least for this “fresh start” event?
The FAQ says that you can watch it from your country if you can see the button “Available now” but doesn’t list the countries, so we’ll see!
The good news is that there is more time to watch this time around, some movies can be seen until the 2024/09/30 10:00:00 and the other ones until 2024/10/31 10:00:00
Just registered. Am watching “Tokyo Swindlers” on Netflix at the moment.
Registered too, although I don’t think I’ll watch what’s on offer right now, got a huge backlog to get through anyway.
However, I did launch one of them to test and there’s not one but two pieces of good news:
- no more country restrictions, so VPN no longer needed for some of us
- the video quality has been bumped up to 720p
Do I miss something here or are there really only 5 films available in Germany?
Fortunately there are functions for sorting and filtering this huge amount of films in the list .
How many films do you get in other countries?
Also only 5
For starters, you missed the bit four days ago when I said
Doesn’t ‘five more films’ suggest that there are others?
