ISLAND šŸ (Visual Novel Book Club)

Hehe you can always discuss with me in spoiler tags

How did you manage to read 20k characters per day for 23 days? I know that youā€™re level 60 and probably read way faster than me, but still! My head feels like itā€™s going to explode if I read much more than 5k characters per dayā€¦ I have done so a few times, but thereā€™s no way I can read that fast many days in a rowā€¦

Thanks! I think right now I just feel confused. I canā€™t put the VN down though. Must read one more scene and find out how it all ends!

It will come with the speed, just keep reading!

Iā€™m reading along, but Iā€™m sooo slow! Iā€™m catching insects with Sara right now and planning to go to a sweets shop with Karen. Far from any major branches yet I think

Should I just enjoy reading what I can read and stop doing too many lookups? Likeā€¦ I note down everything to a spreadsheet which I import to Anki later.

Iā€™ve never actually finished WK before :stuck_out_tongue: But it was mainly just me spending a lot of time reading the VN every day since I wanted to finish it before the Flowers club started during that time. I normally donā€™t read 20k+ characters a day

Yes! Please do! I read Island on my PC, looking up what I donā€™t understand (just look up, I donā€™t add it to Anki or anything). I also read a couple of other VNs on my Switch, not looking up anything (just switching to English to check when I donā€™t understand). I find that for me, looking up everything doesnā€™t help me at all, and I enjoy it more when I just read. Since Iā€™m only on level 15, I need either Textractor plus lookups or Switch with English translation available, but since youā€™re at level 60 you should be OK just reading. Just try it and see if it works or not!

Hmmā€¦ I was sure that you were level 60. If youā€™re not, and you read that many VNs, that gives me hope that Iā€™ll be able to read more than I thought and sooner than I thought!

I sure nope not! :joy:

I have had a few ā€œcrazyā€ days too, but crazy for me is 12k one day. I have never read 20k in one day, and I probably never will!

I stopped WK in the mid 30s. A lot of the words I was adding to anki from my reading overlapped with WK so didnā€™t make sense to me to do double the work :stuck_out_tongue:

I challenge you to keep reading for one year regularly like you do and come back and see if it still holds :grimacing:

Imo with a mystery story like this one, it is important to maintain a certain minimum reading speed so that you donā€™t forget the hints that were dropped earlier by the time they get explained. Thatā€™s why I shamelessly turn on Textractorā€™s auto translate function the moment I feel I lost the thread and am missing stuff.

Yeah, I started Route C but barely managed to finish the first scene. Sorry . I understand youā€™re eager to talk about it, no doubt Iā€™ll be, too.

Btw, is it normal for VNs to have main routes branch off at such a random point that youā€™d never find them without a guide?

My strategy was to write stuff down :stuck_out_tongue: mostly dates and stuff. But yeah in general I agree, faster does help to retain the information, I also sometimes forgot stuff. And this VN is confusing even if you have all the information so that doesnā€™t help

Not uncommon I would say. Maybe @AzusaChan can confirm, I think I have played less VNs! I can think of at least one other VN where you have to start again from the beginning each time and it branches out at different places according to whatever you did 6 choices ago.

It depends a lot on the VN. Sometimes there will be only one choice so its obvious and other times there will be a lot of choices throughout the first few chapters that are seemingly completely unrelated that will change which route you get. I always play with a guide though since I donā€™t like to backtrack trying to find out where I went wrong.

ROUTE C SPOILERS INSIDE, PLEASE BE CAREFUL!

This post is all spoilers!

I have reached scene 11 in the last part of route C. No choices so far, just a linear route.

In the beginning it was really slow, but now thereā€™s so much happening. I feel so sorry for Karin, I wanted to cry for Peach when I saw her bullet wounds and heard the story about her family, but I also want to cry for Sara. I really do think sheā€™s trying to be the best she can be given her situation. Itā€™s just a difficult world to be in and a difficult situation for everyone.
Not sure what Rinneā€™s part in this is, but I have a feeling that the machine sheā€™s building will be important soon.
Most of all, Iā€™m enjoyng the VN. Enjoying the music and the artwork and the story. I donā€™t want this to end, but I also want it to end so I can find out whatā€™s behind all this!

I have enough of time travel paradoxes :hear_no_evil:

Route B (Sara) SPOILER

I hate the fact that Sara has killed me twice and Iā€™m supposed to care, act like a good friend, take different choices and achieve a good ending.
Maybe sheā€™s already travelled back in time after taking my nanomachines?? Does it affect the save points? Is this some Doki Doki Literature Club kind of horror? :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Iā€™ll skim through the other routes to get the whole story.
Overall I liked reading ISLAND, what a ride. But at 50 hours, I want to move on to other VNs now.

The best is yet to come! Have you played both route A and B? Route C is the best part.

And this is where I am now, in the last part of route C:

232 hours so far, and still not done!

Would I recommend this game to other players? Absolutely yes, but please know that itā€™s a looooooong gameā€¦

I agree!

Interesting to see it in number of hours! Here was mine:

And 178 vs 232 hours (and at least 50 more hours to go) is the difference between level 5-20 (ish) and level 40-60 (ish). I canā€™t wait to get better and faster at reading!

Iā€™ve read properly only the route B in about 40 hours.
Then I skimmed through the other two routes in about 13 hours (I skipped a lot of dialogues I found irrelevant and tried to understand what happened in route A and C).

My opinion of the VN and spoilers

I liked the visual novel, but not enough to read it for 200 hours.

The story and time travel were intriguing, music and art were beautiful, but I couldnā€™t relate to the MC. He was acting dumb way too often and I was a bit uncomfortable by him hanging out with kids? How old was he anyway?
Also, goddamit Sara. I could forgive you for killing me 2 times, but not the chicken!!
Rant over.

Please be careful, serious spoilers ahead!!!
Route C questions (spoilers):

Did Setsuna or anyone else ever travel back in time? Was the time machine in Winter chapter capable of going back in time?

Did the history repeat itself somehow?

Who is Rinne? Who is Kuon? Who is Setsuna?

Did Rinne repair the other time machine and go into the future to follow Setsuna? Sheā€™s Kuon and her child is Rinne? (apparently she conceived with Setsuna in Winter)

Who left the ā€œSetsuna must dieā€ note in Rinneā€™s mansion?
