He sounds like a tremendously snobby douche. For all intents and purposes, WaniKani’s and Anki’s SRS functions exactly the same. Just ignore him, he has no idea what he’s talking about.
It’s perfectly fine to inform yourself about language learning if you are spending lots of hours for years dedicated to it… check what you are able to implement according to your routine and likes and likewise adjust whatever you see fit.
both anki and WK can be terrific tools if you are able to stick to a routine and progressively start to that what you learn put into actual use progressively 
There’s no point in aiming at efficiency alone if you loath what you’re doing
