Is it worth keeping up with BunPro? Getting through all the vocabulary is tedious, and I don’t feel like there’s a point if I’m going to see it in WaniKani eventually. Is it worth going through BunPro right now to get through Genki easier or should I look up words as I go and wait until WaniKani picks up and then supports the rest of the Japanese learning journey?
This might hold some controversy, but I’ve come to realize that Bunpro functions quite similarly to Duolingo – it is a great supplemental resource, but isn’t optimized to be a primary learning avenue. Bunpro works best for me when I use a textbook and want extra study for the grammar points I’m exposed to in the book. When I try to learn straight from Bunpro, the grammar doesn’t stick.
Obviously, this could be different for everyone, but if Bunpro isn’t working for you then don’t force yourself to keep slogging through it and paying for the service. Try using a textbook (Genki, Quartet, Tobira, etc. depending on your level) since the grammar will be grouped into logical categories rather than by JLPT level.
EDIT because I can’t read: Looks like you’re using Bunpro primarily for vocab, not grammar? I don’t use the vocab flashcards since I prefer a mixture of Anki and Torii. But again, unless Bunpro is logically grouping vocab together by anything other than JLPT level, it might be a better plan to either use a textbook and/or rely on mining from sources you’re interested in. Don’t pay for services that are a pain, they’ll just end up a waste of money.
You could save money on both and use renshuu.org
It has srs for vocab, kanji, grammar, and various other ways to study. It’s free although there is a premium version which you can trial whenever you’d like to activate that.
It’s also run by a real guy who hires various native speakers for the audio and there’s no ai generated language content. Some ai art unfortunately escaped notice in a contest, but that’s the only ai art.
I’ve only used Bunpro for the grammar, not the vocab, and I’ve found it very helpful. The grammar sentences don’t use AI. There’s another thread recently on Bunpro vs Genki. But essentially, I got to N3 without using a textbook at all.
