It’s available on the App Store here.
Simply install the app, input an API key, and add the widget to your home screen. The list of critical items will update once a day, and the WaniKani item visible in the widget will update once every thirty minutes.
You can also manually trigger a refresh of the critical items list if you want to.

What permissions do I need to associate with the API key?

Just the basic read permissions! You don’t have to check anything extra.

Looks good. I’ve been using it for a day and nice to see the words pop up in my screen.
How do you define a “Critical Item” out of interest??
I love this! Two quick ideas:
- Any way to have the reading and meaning blurred until tapping on it? If that’s even possible with widgets.
- Can you add a “dark mode” option with a more subdued way of conveying the respective radical, kanji, or vocab colors?
Wanikani defines the critical items. You can see critical items on wanikani at https://www.wanikani.com/critical-items

I’m not actually using the official critical items list (I don’t know how to get that from the API).
For my app, critical items are defined as your most missed items within Guru and Apprentice levels. Your most often missed items appear at the top of the list, with Apprentice showing before Guru.

Widgets can’t be interactive like that. What I could do is include an option to blur or just hide the reading and meaning on the widget itself, and then when you tap it it will open the app and show you the reading and meaning. I’ve gotten that request over on Reddit as well.

This is also highly requested over on Reddit. I’ll play around with it.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of time at the moment to edit the app, so I won’t be able to get on it right away.

Understood. Perhaps a fun work around would be to have a “critical item” widget and a “translation” widget that the user could stack on their home screen to scroll back and forth on to effectively reveal the answer.
Just brainstorming. Thanks for taking time out of your own schedule to produce a product for all of us to explore together. True community!
