Hey everyone!!

The first beta for Android is now live! It is a closed beta, so only available for people who have signed up (you can still sign up for the beta, and I’ll add you as soon as I see it)

<del>play_store-01

:warning: A heads up: I don’t have an Android device so I cannot fully test it outside of a simulator. So a few things might (and will) be broken in this beta. I’ll gather feedback and fix things as soon as I can, so don’t hold back on sending bug reports, performance issues, feedback, and feature requests. Also, for the music feature, I think Android tends to put a lot of adds on youtube videos in third party apps, but with a VPN you should be able to use the features without them!

I’ve just discovered your app, and I have had a quick go. Wow, this is fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing. I will be donating when I next get paid.

I have a couple of quick suggestions (I apologise if these features are already there and I’ve missed them).

  1. On the Level tab, is it possible to look back to previous levels? I can only see my current level. Sometimes I like to remind myself of what I have learnt and how many items are mastered, enlightened, burned etc.

  2. It is possible to add the daily limit to the lessons. On the WaniKani website I have this set as 15, but I can’t find a way to set this limit within your app.

Again, mega thanks for what you have built so far; you are a WaniKani rock star! :sign_of_the_horns:

These 2 should be now on the app. Make sure to enable these settings to test it out.

Thank you so much for the support!!! Glad you’re enjoying the app

Currently only the incomplete previous levels. You can technically filter out in the search tab by level to some specific level items, but I’ll soon add a way to check previous levels more easily.

This is available in the “Analytics” tab, and you can tap into any of these to see all of the items in that stage.

No, but I’ll add it soon!

The anime clips audio works great! Hopefully, I’ll be able to understand them eventually at normal speed, but this should help meanwhile!

I also like the audio in the Context Sentence Practice tab, but would it be better for the audio not to play immediately? Let us try to read the sentence first and then let us select to play the audio to verify that we read it correctly?

I just sent you a tip. I really appreciate all your hard work.

Oops my bad, I forgot to add the “Auto-play” setting like in the listening quiz. Should be fixed now!

Works great! Thank you!

I just installed. Will use, check, and give feedbacks later. Thank you.

Feedback: The back to dashboard button seems a bit too low?

I used the anime context/sample before using one of the chrome plugins, but didn’t use it anymore due to changing laptop. It is in your app, back to the real life examples. Excellent.

Hi,

I raised this issues in the app, but I’m unable to attach a picture there even when starting a new request. I’ve attached screenshots linked to the following issue…

My Guru’d Vocab on level 4 should be 14, but it’s showing 7 which I think it my Apprentice Vocab.

I’ve also attached a screenshot of what the WaniKani website shows.

Hopefully this helps but let me know if you need more info.

The vocabulary reading, either the typing became very sensitive or just the app. It didn’t happen in other app or normal typing.

After every う or い it will somehow add extra うる or いり when any R sound kana follows.

Like ryouri, became ryouururi, riri became riiriri.

Feature request: like in Smouldering durtle, could there be a setting to enable prioritizing review for:

SRS and the opposite (start with Aprentice 1, or the opposite)

Level and the opposite (start with lowest level, or the opposite)

And so on like below.

So overall I’ve been using this app quite frequently and been exploring the different practice modes. Everything looks so sleek yet the app is definitely feature packed! Hard to believe one person was able to make this…

Anyways, I’ve run into a feature where I was hoping I could make some suggestions? It was regarding kanji writing practice, which I’ve recently started so i can be able to write and reproduce nice looking kanji. Though stroke order is important, it doesn’t allow me to check my handwriting. If I could, I would suggest a kanji writing practice mode that allows for freehand writing after being given the reading and meaning. Then after completing, the user can compare their written version to a standard one. Options I think would be good afterwards would be retry (incorrect) or next (correct). (Also I think a retry option would be good to add in the current writing practice mode after we make a mistake with a kanji)

Also could there be a feature to allow us to mark a kanji that’s giving us trouble so we can return to it and practice writing it again later?

That being said I don’t expect in anyway for you to be able to implement all this, but it’s more like a wishlist. I still enjoy the app just as it is and love stumbling upon features as I explore around. You’re doing a great job!

Hey everyone!! Thanks for all the feedback! I’ve got some time to work on it today.

To avoid spamming, I’ll just reply to everyone in this message

Android UI fixes

Fixed these screens to be aware of the nav buttons on Android, now they should be above that bar (I might’ve missed some screens)

This should be fixed too :crossed_fingers:

Oh, that’s because search shows as a tab on iOS instead of a button up there. I moved the last button to settings so that it doesn’t get overlapped. Thanks for flagging this!

Ordering feature

This should be now in the app, thanks for the suggestion! Check the settings and select your custom ordering. If you want more ordering options I can add those too

Vocabulary count issue

Hey!! thanks for flagging this!!! I was miscounting this because it wasn’t counting the Kana Vocabulary. Should be fixed now

Kanji Writing Feature

Hey!! this is awesome feedback, and I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the app!! I’ve added a setting in the kanji writing test to do an “Unguided test” where you just check the results at the end. I still have to polish a bit the grading system (note that it is a bit strict on stroke order, but you can configure how strict it is in the settings page). And please, send as many feature requests as you want! As long as they’re doable and I think that they will make the app better I’ll do my best to add them!

These are still not done, but should be done soon!

Feedback or feature request: resume on reviews.

I accidentally exit my review, turns out, there is no resume features. Good thing I only set the review as 6 items per batch.

Oh good point, thanks!! I’ll start working on this soon (I still have a bunch of feature requests on the queue, and this probably overlaps a bit with the work I’m doing to make the reviews available offline).

However, you shouldn’t worry too much about losing progress, since, as soon as you submit both reading and meaning of a subject, that gets automatically submitted, you don’t have to finish all your reviews. And, since reading and meaning for a subject are at most 9 questions apart, the worst case scenario you’ll just lose 8-9 readings or meanings answered
