Nice, thanks! A small bit of feedback on the timeline, could it also show totals here? I think this is just additions right?
Again, appreciate the app and your responsiveness!
Yep, good call.
Sure! thanks for the feedback, it really helps too.
Really enjoying the app so far! Just wondering, would it be possible to show notes from Wanikani in the app? When I do lessons I like to have notes and it’d be nice to be able to see them while I do reviews in the app
thanks! what do you mean by notes? user synonyms? or the details with meaning, reading, context, kanji composition sections? every item has a detail page, and I’m working on filling out the sections to match WK
Am I crazy, or is there no way to get notifications? I would love a push that says reviews are ready, etc., but can’t seem to figure that out.
Huh I somehow totally missed that, did t even realize it was a thing on WK. I will implement.
So the way push notifications work is it sends one daily reminder based on the time you last completed a lesson the previous day. The idea is to not overwhelm or bother you and only notify you if you haven’t done a session by your usual daily time. Check in settings that they’re enabled.
That being said, I can add more notifications as options for the things you mentioned, any others you’d like?
Amazing, thank you so much for looking into it!
Saw the 1.2.0 (I think) update this morning on iOS and now I see the notes, amazing and fast work! Thank you thank you
For sure! yep notes are in there now, online only at this point, in a future revision will add offline access for the notes with proper database and sync stuff. Android 1.2 is still cooking, waiting on Google to approve.
Great looking update!! I just recently starting using the app and appreciate the relaxed approach. Since updating, the skip option seems to be gone, though. It’s now „swipe if you don’t know“ instead of „swipe to skip“. I kind of liked the skip option and wonder, if it’s still hidden somewhere. Otherwise, I’d probably go back to Tsurukame… ![]()
Well we can’t have that ![]()
what exactly would you like the skip to do and how does Tsurukame handle it? I’m happy to adjust it.
Just so you know, between 1.2.0 and earlier versions, I didn’t actually change the logic for skip at all, just the label, so you can use the same swipe to “skip”.
what skip currently and previously does: it marks the answer wrong and just lets you move on. If you have repeat mistakes on, they will show up again toward the end of the lesson, if not, thats it. Same with if you have split meanings and readings on or off. It’s basically saying “I don’t know.”
I did remove the swipe to skip button from multiple choice, because I thought, just a random guess is as fast as skipping, and less buttons = less clutter. When you’re typing though, swipe to skip should work exactly the same as before, just a different label to better explain the intent is you are saying you don’t know the answer so it will be marked wrong, not like skipping over it somehow or as if you’ve never encountered it. I think a skip like that would defeat the point of the SRS system, but let me know if I am wrong.
Thank you for the extensive reply. I haven’t used the app long enough before the recent update to really be able to tell if the swipe function is fundamentally different now. What skipping in Tsurukame does, is that it just lets me proceed to the next item in my review chain. I usually do batches of 5 items. If I don’t immediately know the meaning or reading, I skip to the next item in the batch. The skipped item is not marked as wrong, but will just be brought up again during the same batch review session. I like to get rid of the easy and obvious in my review batch first and leave items that I need to think about more to the end.
Hope that makes sense…
Therefore, my interpretation of Skip in Gakugame was that it’s doing the same thing: just putting the skipped item at the end of the current review batch, without marking it as wrong.
Any plans for an Anki mode like Tsurukame has? If I’m on my phone I prefer the “yes, I got it/no, I didn’t” input to typing on a phone screen.
have you tried multiple choice? I intentionally have not introduced anki mode because i think multiple choice solves the quick input on mobile problem in a better way, while also solving other problems and keeping the app simpler with 2 modes of entry rather than introduce a 3rd. Still as always I’m open to hearing different perspectives on it.
OK I see. Well no skip in Gakugame was never doing that actually. Basically you want skip to send to back but not update its state in any other way, rather than take it out of the batch entirely, is that right? And if you have retry mistakes ON, those mistakes will also get sent to back along with the skipped items, and deal with those together? In that way, you could skip again, and it just sends to the back again, so long as there is N+1 items remaining to still change the order, is that right? I could see that making more sense, I had originally thought of it as an “i dont know” just mark it wrong and remove it from the list kind of thing. and its faster than typing nonsense. So now I wonder if both commands should be there or not.
Yes, you got it right. Skipped items go to the back of the review queue without updating the status. They would come up again (together with mistakes, but not as multiple choice). I could skip again, make a guess or maybe press a dedicated Don’t Know button, if I don’t know.
Multiple choice puts the answer right in front of me with the question, so I never have the opportunity to recall without having the answer in front of me. I really don’t personally see much value in multiple choice in an SRS system.
Well there is an option to hide the answers at first, so you look at the question, recall, then tap to reveal choices, then tap to select your guess. It is one more tap per question than a pure anki mode would be though. I am working on a design which I think will be nice and simple for anki mode, so then different folks can do it the way they like.
