Intermediate Japanese Book Club // Now Reading: 怪人二十面相 (Jan 4th)

Thanks so much @NicoleIsEnough for organising all of this and clearly putting in a lot of thought from different perspectives

Perhaps we should give you an award, such as the prestigious WOOW award*

Urgent: does anybody know the return policy on body pillows?

Sure! Will do

Not sure when I’ll manage to put up a page for 妊娠カレンダー

But as helpfully pointed out by @Phryne above, the kindle version is currently on 50% points back on Amazon - for another week or so

PS that also applies to @Phryne 's other pick 嵐のピクニック which I might have just also impulsively added to my to-read pile…

My new credit card is rejected by my Kindle REEEEEEEEE

Maybe it was flagged for all the body pillows.

I’m ready.

NB: I have not yet finished 変の家, but I once jumped to the end of the book. Therefore my kindle thinks that I have read it all. As for the other books the act of downloading them gets me 1% of achievement.

You just need to download 100 books and then you will have read 100%.
That’s how it works isn’t it…

No, the percentage shows how far you have got with this particular book. I have other books showing e.g. 10%. Perhaps kindle is always rounding up, so having seen the cover counts for 1%.

I think the percentage should rather show the current position in the book (i.e. where you are when you open this book). Then for 変の家 it would be 69% - I’m one week ahead of the official schedule.

Does ebookjapan let you download in an epub-like format or is it just a proprietary reader like bookwalker? Since I can’t get amazon.co.jp to work and I don’t see physical copies for sale where I am, I’m looking for alternatives…

I usually use the Natively page to find a lot of links:

I personally buy novels on Rakuten and then use some tools to transform the book to an epub format.

Yeah I found the links there but I didn’t know which platforms offered downloadable books

I’ll try rakuten, thanks.

I’m sure there are forums specifically on this, but Amazon jp often requires a physical address in Japan (though will accept non local cards usually). You need a different account password from the one you use with amazon in other countries. Occasionally requires a VPN (potentially only temporarily) so that it thinks you are there.

I did all that and it used to work but I changed bank and my new card seems to be rejected.

You’re in Portugal right? For books still in print (generally if they still show up new on Amazon), I’ve made custom orders with Verasia, just email the title and isbn and they confirm the price and delivery time (normally 3-5 weeks). Delivery is a flat 4 €

I did do that for 変な家 although it took them almost two months to get it in stock so I may not get it by the start of the club.

Also more generally I don’t think I’ll want to buy every book in these clubs so I still want to have a digital option regardless, but also I want to be able to read from my Kindle and not a screen.

Ouch that’s a long time. I’m trying Neokyo this time because I can get a used book cheap on Mercari through them, but I haven’t done the delivery yet so tbd if that’s a good idea…

good luck with the digital!

Worse come to worse I did find a random epub of the book in the Download folder of my hard drive. What a coincidence…

On another note, our pick has a frequency based vocab list on jpdb!

Does your new card possibly come with a restriction concerning the countries in which it can be used? I can define for my card a list of allowed countries. Have you used for other online purchases?
