Intermediate Japanese Book Club (Now Reading: 地球星人)

Talk to Murakami Haruki about this topic

Well I was thinking of him actually. And in his case it makes sense: there are no ebook whatsoever since he hates them. But here there are some ebooks, so it cannot be that

Well, for Murakami there are also some ebooks, which is what makes it so weird for me!

(because I know he hates them, but then again :woman_shrugging:)

That’s… weird. I checked about a year or so ago, and couldn’t find anything. Then I came across something saying he was opposed to them, and I just stopped looking. Maybe I just didn’t look hard enough?

I think they are probably there for more than a year. But I kinda went through the same process, first I couldn’t find any, then I read that he dislikes them, and so I did not look as much any more. But then I think I accidentally discovered one or two of them. And yeah, no clue on why especially those ones…

The only thing I found was that week 12 end page should be 186, not 187.

Otherwise looks good!

Thanks! I fixed it.

I was updating the OP, and it just struck me: we are about to read our 10th book with the club! It feels like a milestone. Here’s to (hopefully) 10 more! :tropical_drink:

When is the vote for the next book?

Usually we aim to finish voting about 6 weeks before the reading starts, so that people can get their copy even if that takes some time. That would be end of June / early July, I guess. But maybe it’s advisable to allow for more time for shipping these days? - or is nowadays everybody on digital media anyway?

Yeah. Why not put up a poll right now?

Well, I’m not the one to decide, but personally I think it’s better to wait a bit longer because that will increase the likelihood that those who voted will actually participate (I mean, people losing interest and dropping out or simply forgetting after a long time is a thing after all) and that their vote will actually reflect their interest at the time when the bookclub starts (because interests change, and in 3 months I might not be interested in reading a book I voted for today).

Apart from that, we would also want to give everybody a heads up before the voting starts so that people can submit new proposals.

Is there a specific reason why you are so keen on voting right now?

Because we’re only on week two of the current book.

So, about that Hyakunin Isshu splinter group…

Yes.

Well, as for me, the corona situation has destroyed the remnant of my free time as working from home has decreased my productivity by 50% (I don’t work less, it’s just that it causes a lot of overhead from having to use various online tools and whatnot; also asking everything by email/slack takes a lot more time than just asking directly someone). So my free time just went out the window. Keeping up with the current bookclubs (and, well, reading a bit by myself still) is all I can manage at the time. I may be able to follow along if people do it, but I definitely do not have the time to do the kind of research I had in mind when we first talked about this group

That being said my workplace is currently planning to restart normal activities from July, and hopefully earlier than that considering that the numbers of corona cases in Japan are decreasing fast. When that happens, I will hopefully get some of my time back.

@Belthazar I just want to update that things are finally getting back to normal at work. If everything goes according to 計画 today, I should finally be getting back my free time.
If so, I can make a home thread for the book tomorrow-ish. I’m planning to first just put a summary of the discussion we’ve been having so far, just so that we can iron the details first. Anything specific you think I should include?

The dates of the karuta competition we’re planning on entering? :stuck_out_tongue:

But no, nothing springs to mind.

That reminds me of this…

The thread is up. I took way too long overthinking it, scrapped everything and just went with this:

Definitely not my best thread, but at least I’m falling forward.

Definitely the best title yet. :+1:
