Intermediate Japanese Book Club (Now Reading: 地球星人)

@Ditto20 @Airdramon - Thanks, guys!

Ah, I noticed our club talking about it a bit in the Week 6/7 Haruhi thread. Seems like most people from Haruhi didn’t like it… Hmm…

Nice to know how easy it is, Belthazar! Is that only kanji/vocab-wise, or grammar-wise too?

I had no idea there was a 1983 movie!!! Yeah, I have the 2004-06 (or something like that) anime movie. Absolutley loved my first watch - where the DVD player screwed up and at some point RE-STARTED the movie! It was hilarious! And “all her fault” too… XD

Still good on the next watch, but I’ll never forget that first run-through with my friends… That woman with the groceries was always going to die, in that run through…

Oh! The voice actor was the actress in the new movie?! More reason to check out that take.

Hmmm… So the prequel focuses on the guy, then? If that’s the case, I definitely want to read it… Or does it focus on that woman who is like “this is normal for girls your age” in the anime, because that could be interested too. Hmm… Either way, I’m intrigued!

Turned out it was two samurai movies ad. One of them was samurais vs ninjas.

The anime is sort of a spiritual sequel/remake. You could say the book is about the anime protagonists aunt, but it doesn’t quite line up that way. That seems to be the intention.

For some reason volume 3 of Planetes isn’t available on Amazon Japan even though the rest is. Hopefully it’s back in stock in a few months…

I figured since I suggested the book club winner, I should get ready to prepare the appropriate threads…

So here goes:

In case I made mistakes or forgot something, please help me along! Thx

That was fast!

Nice, thanks.

I may just have to believe that about the book while reading that (until the book proves otherwise) or something, then. Teeheehee…

Would really love for it to be about that other person I blurred, though… that would be something.

It actually took me two days or so to realize that I was actually the person who should do that :joy_cat:

And once I reached that point, I was just too curious to see how this thread-creating works…

Sounds like we are starting one week after starting

Oh hehe - trapped

EDIT: Got confused by the many sections - this was intended to go into the read-along session section

I wouldn’t know - I fell behind early on and never managed to catch up. :stuck_out_tongue:

There were films in 1983, 1997, 2002, 2006 (the anime) and 2010, and drama series (or episodes within other series) in 1972, 1985, 1994 and 2016.

Yeah, Makoto’s aunt (the art restorer) is the main character of the novel, though admittely it’s never made completely explicit. Makoto’s conversations with her directly reference several events in the novel, but yeah, you notice she never outright says “oh, I’m a time-traveller too”.

Gauging general interest in reading two books outside of the normal book club.

魔法少女育成計画. I’m probably going to read this after コンビニ人間 in place of キッチン, so I’m seeing who’s interested in joining me. If no one is, or it’s too small of a group, I’ll just read it on my own.

  • I’d join a non-scheduled (misc discussion/question) book club
  • I’d join a scheduled book club at a pace of 20 pages or less a week
  • I’d join a scheduled book club at a pace of more than 20 pages a week
  • I’d rather wait to see if it wins as an official pick for the book club
  • I’m not interested in reading this book

獣の奏者. I didn’t nominate this for the book club because it’s a little too long. If we do some kind of club, we’d likely want to read at least the first two books (out of four) since they combine into a single story. The first book is 360 pages and the second is 488 pages (the third and fourth for reference are over 500 pages each). I’d probably aim to start reading this in December or even a bit later depending on what else is going on.

Is there still no ebook version of 魔法少女育成計画 (I couldn’t find it in the usual pages, just the manga)? I’d probably like to read it but shipping is… an issue.

There is now! I just noticed it for the first time yesterday.

It’s literally just released. I saw it available for pre-order a few days ago.

You can nominate just the first half of the first book. It’s an independent book too!

It’s only 192 pages!

Wooow, that’s some perfect timing. I literally looked for it before the voting and didn’t find it.

Just went to check my usual go-to (ebookjapan) and it seems it’s there as well with a nice “New” tag.
Now I can vote on this poll :kissing_smiling_eyes:

Maybe it would have won if the ebook was available at the time.

Nah, reading only a quarter of the story isn’t ideal.

It was okay, actually
It stops at the reasonable point. There’s some foreshadowing about what comes next (I assume since I only read that one) but the action is mostly wrapped up at that point.
