Intermediate Japanese Book Club // Now Reading: あなたも殺人犯になれる!

Oh, I see! Just two months ago, an informal reading group was formed for the book, so I’m not really sure whether there is still so much interest in the book for the Intermediate club  Also, people seemed to think that it was a bit hard to read, at least initially.

Whoa! Dang how did I miss my chance, I was on the site then!? I really had no idea about this.

In that case, maybe I’ll read it on my own and just comment in that group instead. Thank you and Iinchou for pointing it out to me!

Oh you did not miss your chance, luckily! As it’s an informal reading group, there is no schedule and everybody reads on their own starting date and own pace. Feel free to comment in that thread, or ask questions! People still follow the thread and will reply. :+1:

Hello everyone! A new club for light novels is being held over on Natively, and we’re voting on our first read until June 16. Please feel free to join if it’s something you’d be interested in!

One quick update from me: our first voted book is コップクラフト; if interested, our home thread is here!

If you’re after a spooky read for the summer, why not come and vote for the Halloween/Spooky Summer Book Club’s first official pick? We’ll start reading July or August, on probably a loose timetable - it’s summer after all!

We’re still one day early, but I’ve got the first thread for our new pick, あん, up. I hope to see you guys there! (And if someone can update the title/main post of this thread tomorrow, that would be lovely)

Looks like the right date to me. :stuck_out_tongue:

Quick shout out that the Natively Mystery Book Club is now voting! Also shouted this out in the ABC, but there’s decent overlap with the IBC.

The poll runs for 7 days and we have 18 books to choose from! Most of them fall in the ABC level and our speed tends to be around 30-50 pages a week*; a few are on the easier side (mid 20s Natively level).

*we tend to start slower and ramp up as people get impatient to know the solution to the mystery

We’ll be starting week 2 of あん. Be sure to give it a try, even if you are a bit late and missed week 1 - we’re taking it slow in the beginning!

Join us here for the 3rd week of あん :slightly_smiling_face:

Usually people just post these in the home thread for that book club. I don’t think those of us not reading along need to see these every week.

Oops, thank you for letting me know! I won’t post here for the next weeks

Personal Opinion

I’ve been wanted to read it since I’ve seen @pm215 recommend it in another thread, see below, and it looks like it’s about the same length and level as あん so I thought it would make a good pick for the IBC. pm215’s review:

I feel bad following up a ad with another ad, but I’ll do it anyways.

The BBC is holding a vote on what we will read next have a look:

Thinking about nominating とんがり帽子のアトリエ here because level 26 and 208 pages seems to be on the higher limit for the BBC, but for the IBC it looks like the lower limit according to the previous picks.
I haven’t joined the IBC before so I don’t know how you guys would feel about the nomination?

I can’t really answer that question, considering I’ve never finished reading a book with the IBC before, but I just wanted to say that wherever a read of とんがり帽子のアトリエ will happen, I’ll join it!

Personal Opinion

Beautiful art and interesting story, I haven’t tried it myself but I hear this book is popular! In 2020, the series won the Harvey Award for the Best Manga category as well as the Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia.

Pros and Cons for the Book Club

Pros

  • The series has 12 books (I believe it is ongoing) and an anime has been announced

Cons

  • Maybe not very challenging for the IBC, but the pace can be adjusted accordingly (though I spotted some handwritten text, I’m sure this will be fun deciphering)

This looks absolutely gorgeous, and judging from the sample pages, it doesn’t seem any harder than the stuff we’ve read on the BBC recently. So I’m with @TobiasW , I’ll read this wherever it gets hosted.
