Intermediate Japanese Book Club // Now Reading: セーラー服と機関銃

For the start date of 博士の愛した数式, the majority would like to start straight away but 3 people would prefer a one-week break (and some others would not mind a break either). So technically the “start immediately” fraction won, but I think it might still be advisable to give a bit of slack here to make sure everybody can catch up; it’s always exciting to start a new book but otoh we’re not in a rush :relaxed:

Therefore my suggestion would be to start the book after a one-week break, i.e. on Sept. 19.
I hope this is ok for everybody?

I would like to join–when will the next book start? And has it been chosen yet? Thank you

The book club just started a new book a couple weeks ago, so maybe you’d like to try catching up. The details are in the first post. The next book won’t be selected for a few months since this book just started.

Thanks. I think I will try. I love the current book, in its English version

Heads up to everyone who always voted for 君のなは : It is currently being read as an unscheduled book club:

(@Naphthalene and @lantana: I’m wondering whether it would make sense to remove its nomination from the poll as it is being read now?)

The standard approach is to ask the person who nominated the book

That’s why I included lantana

Yes, let’s take it off the list now it has it’s own reading club. If the new page doesn’t get a lot of discussion though I think it would be fair to let someone renominate it in a few votes time. It won’t be me though. After so many 2nd place votes I’ve lost the drive to read it!

Hey, happy WK anniversary! :tada:

That was quite the bummer indeed  Maybe it was about time to clear it off the list…

I nominate myself as the torchbearer of this passed down privilege. :fire: Your name must carry on.

Never!

We’re planning a new intermediate level book club after the 獣の奏者 book club is finished. We’re aiming to start sometime between December 26th and February 13th, to be determined by a poll.

Amazon says it’s 320 pages. I don’t think the digital versions show the same page count anymore, and we should probably go by the paper version.

I’ll say, I did like the anime overall. The first few episodes were a bit slow, but I really liked the second half. One of the biggest appeals was the animation though, which obviously isn’t relevant for the light novel.

Is that how far we’ve got these days

Alright, there does not seem to be too much group activity going on around the current reading, so let’s keep it in the list for now. I will add a note that you are the new nominator. Thank you for bearing the torch :+1:

Probably since ‘ash and’ easily smushes and sounds like ‘ashhand’ and they thought it sounds better this way.

When do votes on nominated books occur? Is this the right thread to watch if I want to vote?

When the end of the current book nears - so probably early-to-mid January.

Yep.

As the current pick will be finished on Feb 5th, which means that the new book might start on Feb 13th, I think we should maybe run a poll soon(ish)? Currently, we are down to 10 nominations though, which gives room for more proposals - i.e. please check your shelves and suggest new books, anybody

Anyways, I’ll go first:

Personal Opinion

I don’t remember who recommended this book to me (or where I read about it), but I definitely bought it because of some kind of recommendation. So there’s that :joy_cat:
Apart from that, I like books that show me people and lifestyles that are outside of what we perceive as “the norm”. Sounds like this book might score multiple times here.

Pros and Cons for the Book Club

Pros

  • Pretty short book with 201 pages
  • Taboo topics, so I think the story might open up interesting views into the Japanese society
  • Was turned into a movie one year after the book was published

Cons

  • Somewhat difficult-to-discuss topic, so maybe not straightforward to read?
  • May contain triggers?
  • No eBook afaik

In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a café which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time.

In Before the Coffee Gets Cold , we meet four visitors, each of whom is hoping to make use of the café’s time-travelling offer, in order to: confront the man who left them, receive a letter from their husband whose memory has been taken by early onset Alzheimer’s, to see their sister one last time, and to meet the daughter they never got the chance to know.

But the journey into the past does not come without risks: customers must sit in a particular seat, they cannot leave the café, and finally, they must return to the present before the coffee gets cold . . .

Personal Opinion

I bought this book in passing, attracted by a “Bestseller” mark on its cover. Well, I have to be honest, right? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Anyways, when I started to read the first chapter, I had a somewhat comfortable feeling of a reading flow which I’d love to return to.
Later on I learned that the book was translated into a handful of languages like English, Russian, Italian, Arabic, Dutch…guess it was received pretty well by the readers.

Pros and Cons for the Book Club

Pros

  • Many positive reviews included a word “heartwarming”. I got that feeling as well. This is a slow book with lots of dialogues between heroes of the specific story.
  • This is not a sci-fi book. Time travels are nothing but background that gives the story a chance to develop.
  • Book is separated into 4 independent stories united only by the place of action. If you are delayed or skip a few weeks you can still join at a later point with no losses.

Cons

  • Stem from the pros: this is a non-action book focusing on human relations. It might seem boring for action-oriented readers
  • It is all about feelings, words said and not said, things done and not done. Might be overcomplicated and errr…dissatisfying? At least I feel that way when the book MC is brooding over sth instead of just doing whatever needs to be done.
