Interleave system and level up speed

Hello,
I recently restarted WK from level 1, limiting myself to 13 lessons a day, and I was wondering about the level up speed using the interleave system.

Compared to doing all vocab from previous level, then all new radicales, then all new kanjis/vocabs, how is the level up speed ? Is it slower or the about the same?

I do the 15 a day wanikani picks automatically, and I find:
It gets you leveled-up within about 10 days (+/- 1).
It does that while also making sure you donā€™t fall behind on vocabulary.

Itā€™s theoretically possible to do it faster, but thereā€™s no getting around the fact that there are about 150 items per level. So at 13/day, itā€™s going to take you about 11-12 days on average, even if you get clever with the order. (That said, you could do significantly worse by doing it in a dumb order)

Vocabulary doesnā€™t contribute to level up speed.

It seems like your goal is to not level up too quickly, but theoretically you can level up merely by learning the radicals and kanji. Of course, vocabulary helps immensely to reinforce the kanji, so itā€™s not beneficial to skip.

Once you get a radical to Guru, its corresponding kanji will unlock.
Once you get a kanji to Guru, its corresponding vocabulary will unlock.

Below level 43, each level has two sets of kanji. The second set will unlock only once the levelā€™s radicals are at Guru.

The fastest you can get an item from zero to Guru is 3 days and 10 hours.

If you focus on radicals and kanji before vocabulary, the fastest you can complete a level is 6 days and 20 hours. The poster above indicated that the default 15 a day that WaniKani picks will level you up in 10-11 days.

This is so helpful, thank you!

Great, Iā€™ll let the default picking then! Thanks!

Hello! I wanted to ask about your experience towards the end of the level using the default options. Iā€™m currently on the same pace (15 per day, all WKā€™s pick) and for levels 2 and 3 ended up in a weird spot where I had 1/2 kanji left to Guru before passing the level, but was running out of vocabulary and had a few days of fewer (and occasionally 1 day of no) lessons.

Do you find that at higher levels, there is enough vocabulary to maintain 15 lessons/day even at that slower level-up speed?

Not at 13 lessons per day, depending what you mean by ā€˜completeā€™. ā€œBeing allowed to start the next levelā€ isnā€™t the same as ā€œcompleting the previous levelā€ when you consider the vocabulary. You have to do them some time.

Unless you intend to ā€œfinishā€ wanikani with hundreds or thousands of un-done vocabulary. Which is a valid choice, but not what most people mean to do.

15 seems to be the sweet spot, yeah. Iā€™ve noticed that if i skip a day of lessons, which is rare but does happen, then I get really close to running out of lessons. Sometimes when i go to do them in the morning, there are only like 6 lessons available, but a few hours later Iā€™ll do a review session and unlock 9+ more. So i can do the 15 in that day, but not when I wanted to. Also i imagine if you fail a key kanji on the guru-up review, that would make you run out of lessons, since it times it just right to finish up the vocab when you were supposed to level up. Hasnā€™t happened to me yet.

I havenā€™t noticed that ever happening if I do my 15 a day every day.

Great, thank you! Iā€™ll take this as a sign that I need to get more consistent about afternoon/evening reviews - I sometimes forget, which means my poor Apprentice 1 turtles stay at that level instead of getting to Apprentice 2 or 3 by the next dayā€¦

Iā€™ve experienced the same thing at the end of level 1, I donā€™t know if it will happen in future levels. But even if it does, well itā€™ll just be a day where I can relax a bit! Itā€™s good sometimes, it helps not to burn out.

Also I wanted to complete my original post: I do my 13 lessons at 8 am (6 am for level 1 and 2) so that there is an intermediate review at noon, and then the big review session is at 8pm everyday.

I have not yet missed an item, so I donā€™t know how Itā€™ll manage them in my planning. But I find this planning quite ideal regarding my lifestyle.
