In-context Language Learning Tools

Hi everyone!

I’m currently working on an idea for a language-learning program that aims to solve a problem I’ve had found in the language learning tools I’ve used.

I find that flashcard apps are difficult because of their out-of-context nature. I have words that I’ve burned on WaniKani that I still wouldn’t be able to use in a sentence, because the process of reviewing by translating a single word is so different from how words are used in speech.

On the other hand, in-context learning tools such as Duolingo are completely non-personalised - whenever I’ve used them I’ve found myself constantly repeating the same sentences that I already know.

I’m wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? I’d be hugely grateful for anyone’s thoughts on this!

So, what’s the idea?

SRS as reinforcement, immersion for seeing the word in context. There’s a market for a tool that lets you practice/see words in various contexts in the transitional period between starting out as a complete beginner and large amounts of immersion being plausible.
