The meaning is about sewing the top hats together with thread to form a group. This is a good mnemonic, using the two radicals.
The reading is そ、and misses the obvious. Just use the ‘sew’ already introduced in the meaning. Sew and so sound almost the same.
The problem is that sew is already used as a mnemonic for そう, so it would be inconsistent and confusing to have it for そ.
This messed up the obvious mnemonic for 漏 as well…
OTOH, this potential confusion hasn’t stopped some other such mnemonics from being given…
maybe, hadn’t thought of it like that. I don’t really stick to them as rigidly as that.
