I made a free app to help master visually similar kanji

One minor frustration though is the inability to deselect an option once clicked, several times I’m clicking on two kanjis or two meanings successively because i found the match for the second option and losing my streak… ;_;

Good question. I guess prefer the reading, but in cases like this an option or both would be sweet.

I realize I’m asking a lot here, so I’ll gladly take whatever is manageable

I believe this should work. You simply need to click the same card again to deselect it. However, I guess it’s visually not clear if your cursor remains on the card after deselecting it. Additionally, there’s a slight difference in the audio when you deselect a card. Can you confirm this on your end? Otherwise, there is a bug

For what it’s worth: For me this works, and found that it works as expected.

True both options would be probably the best approach even if it’s technically a bit more difficult then

All good, I mean I asked for feedback so that’s just fair enough . I’ll probably end up starting with the quick wins / simpler tasks first and then see how I can tackle the larger tasks

Just released version 1.3.0. Thanks for the feedback!

Just tried the 1.3 version. Works great! I’ll definitely put it in my routine and probably do all the reviews 1-2x per week. I regularly find that I confuse lower level kanji when they come back to me in the Guru II / Master stages and I’ve learned a new similar looking kanji. This will at the very least help with detecting those pitfalls early, if not eliminate them. And I love how it’s so lightweight it takes no time at all to go through the review pile.

Thanks again for making this app!

Issue got fixed in 1.3.1!

Summary

Unfortunately I’m getting blue screens during reviews lately:

Happens during reviews after matching a few Kanji. I’ve seen it happen on at least two separate review sessions.

I’m using the 1.3.0 version.

Hey there! Thanks a bunch for reaching out and sharing the error message. That’s super helpful! I’ll definitely take a look into this. I’ve been swamped with work and studies lately, so I haven’t had much time to work on it. But I’ll do my best to fix this bug this weekend!

Hey there! I’ve got some great news! The issue you were facing was a simple fix. Version 1.3.1 is now available for download. Don’t worry, it shouldn’t cause any compatibility problems. Just download the app and start it up. Your progress should remain intact.

Just in case you can back up the com.divingavran.kanjimatch folder, which you can find here (replace user with your username):

  • Windows: C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\LOVE
  • macOS: /Users/user/Library/Application Support/LOVE/
  • Linux: $XDG_DATA_HOME/love/

In that folder are three json files: settings.json with the app settings, kanjiData.json with the actual Wanikani data, and srsData.json which contains the SRS state for each group. In theory, you could edit these files (e.g. change meanings or add Kanjis in the kanjiData.json), but I’m not sure if by doing this you would run into some edge cases which I have not covered in the code

Just went through the entire review queue on 1.3.1 and no issues. Didn’t do a back-up, but it worked without issues after the install.

It’s a joy how it just adds all the current level kanji from WK. Amazing little app
