Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Page numbers

The schedule is based on the page numbers that sometimes appear on the bottom of the pages. On kindle, the page numbers shown by the reader are one bigger.

I’m not enjoying this manga but will still continue.

A bit of advice from someone who’s been there before, just put in spoiler cause it might sound a bit preachy

I think the most important thing of reading and learning a language in general is to enjoy yourself while doing it. It helps the brain remember things more clearly if you’re actively interested in what you’re doing. I don’t think dropping a manga you’re not enjoying and trying another one you might like better is a shortcoming, and I think it saves you a lot of time and frustration.

Thanks it’s all good, I’ll finish it but it doesn’t resonate with me. Not having as much fun with this as normal, just not digging the topic I think. I’m really enjoying the Happiness offshoot book club, just this isn’t my jam. Hope everyone else is enjoying it though!

Hey guys! Long time no post. I’m only just now getting back into WaniKank after a 5 month hiatus. I’ve been on level 8 for a loooong time, and will be until I catch up on a mountain of reviews

Anyways, whoever came up with a google sheets for grammar points, chef’s kiss :ok_hand: grammar is so, so much harder to look up independently as it’s so context dependent in comparison to vocab. So, I will be following this read along even though I don’t (currently) have the book as even the sheets alone are insanely useful, and will be even more useful once I have the book to see what’s going on. So again, whoever came up with that grammar sheet idea, ありがとうございます

Hey guys, a little off topic but, what is your style for reading this manga? Are you reading through first without looking things up, then going back and looking up words to try to find the meaning? How many times are you rereading it? Just some questions.

I usually only read it once and doing that while looking up words. Oftentimes I check ahead in the sentence to see what words I need to know, and then try to understand it.

Do you use flashcards or cloze tests or anything, or do you just read the words and look them up? I personally use anki (for words which I find when reading things) and write the translations next to the words I don’t know for when I reread.

Not really, I don’t do flashcards for words, at least not yet.

im reading through just once but i have sticky notes that im writing my translations on, so i look up words and write out what i think the sentence says, putting it together a piece at a time. i keep the sticky notes with the page so i can go back and see my process. ive been marking new vocab/etc then adding the words to a designated anki deck when i have my computer so i can run through them later. not actively working with anki right now as i have a lot on my plate but helpful to keep track of for when i finish genki or something.

i also have a notebook for keeping vocab/summaries of chapters for once i finish parts. been slacking on that one lately but bit by bit.
