I travel 12 times zones every other year and I never understood how wanikani handles the time zones.
Is the timing for the SRS based on the server or does it change with my timezone.

It’s based on the server. It just gets converted to your time when it displays data on your browser.

Surely it must just use UTC (otherwise this stuff is a nightmare), and perhaps not even doing conversion or anything server side, just leaving it up to the browser/OS to display according to the device’s time zone (as far as I know Chrome does this itself, with other browsers deferring to the OS). Great question!
