How to pace yourself for 365 day learning sprint

Hello, you’re here either because you’re bored and found this, or you want to find out how long it will take to finish wani kani at your pace, or which pace should you set yourself at in order to finish in 1 year (there are reasons other than being stingy such as you being a school student, with your parents not agreeing to pay $89 twice or thrice or other things like ‘life’)

Anyway, I was stupid enough to calculate how much it would take individually adding it. Cuz why not

490 radicals

(idk kanji and vocab seperately)
total things to learn: 9381 divided by 365 = 25.7013698630137 (do 27 in case you miss 1 day a month or so)

without level 1, 2, & 3 (cuz they’re free): 9032 divided by 365 = 24.74520547945205 (do 26 in case of a missed day)

If we were to add reviews to this, we would need to calculate 5x to guru, then 4 more till burnt (81,288) 223 per day. Though you won’t be burning your last ones until 4 months after…

It is impossible to finish at a certain pace in a year (39 learnings daily in order to finish a few months early to be able to burn all your cards by the end of the year)

I’ma try to do it in a year breaking the 368 day record, so updates in some time

That’s technically correct but that’s not what you should focus on in order to achieve “full speed”. Due to the way the unlock system works, if you just focus on doing 26 lessons a day and nothing more you’ll see that some days you run out of lessons to do.

In order to level up you need to guru a certain number of kanji per level, usually all but 2 or 3. When you start a level you don’t usually unlock enough kanji to achieve this immediately due to the radicals (that changes very late into the course, starting with level 48 IIRC).

So what you need to do is:

  • When you level up, do all radical lessons as soon as they unlock since they gate the kanji
  • Do the radical reviews as soon as they become available. That will mean doing reviews at inconvenient hours.
  • You can spread the rest of the unlocked vocab/kanji lessons over the next 3.5 days as you progress with the radicals.
  • After 3.5days you should guru the radicals, at which point the remaining kanji for the level will unlock. You should do those kanji lessons immediately since they gate the level up.
  • For the next 3.5days you should do kanji reviews as soon as they become available and do the vocab lessons
  • Congratulations you have leveled up in less than 7 days, you can now repeat the process again and again and again.

When you reach the “fast” levels where radicals don’t lock enough kanji to impede progress you just have to do kanji lessons and reviews as soon as they become available.

To be clear, I have done this for the first 40 levels and I was losing my mind by the end. I absolutely do not recommend doing this for more than the first 20 to 30 levels. It’s well worth going fast early on if you can stomach it because the kanji you learn are ultra-common and very useful, but you quickly hit diminishing returns around the 1000 kanji mark.

perhaps counterintuitively, while the radical and kanji lessons are the limiter of your speed, the vocab lessons are the thing that help you maintain the accuracy that will let you level up cards at a fast enough rate that your weekly review count stays reasonable. for this reason, i would submit that if you are going full speed, you should still aim to do all your vocab lessons within a couple days of them unlocking.

I did plan to do those for now… Thank you for telling me now; won’t skip them in the future in case of any wandering ideas  Also when did you start using wani kani? Impressive that you’re at level 31

Thank you for this information. I will try to implement your tactics for the first 20 level, and if I survive it till there, I’ll try till 25-30, then I’ll slow my pace down.
Though I’m quite happy not doing lessons on some days because then they’ll be the ‘review only days’ and my life will be easier those days. ANyway thank you very much for sharing, I truly appreciate it
