HMFG's not-really-a-study-log Study Log

Hey y’all, this ain’t gonna be too serious, but I’d like to start a little study log of sorts.

My forum days are far behind me, so I’m not gonna be very actively updating this thread, but I’d like to have something to update whenever I level-up and somewhere to track a couple of personal goals.

I’ve already skipped a few levels, but going forward, I’ll update this forum every time I reach a new level. I’ll also add something fun under the level-up, like a random piece of Video Game trivia. I’ll also try to react or respond to any replies I get in the future.

Click here for a little background

For a little background, I’m an ALT working in Japan, so WaniKani is my main form of Japanese study whenever I’ve got a little extra time at my desk. My hobbies include playing Video Games, watching Film & TV, singing Karaoke (Eng & 日本語!), and thinking about all of the above hobbies without actually doing them.

Here are some goals I’d like to reach:

  • Read a Japanese novel start-to-finish
  • Play a game in Japanese
  • Memorize the Shogi guys
  • Pass the Winter N3 test
  • Try cross-stitching (not Japanese, but :man_shrugging:)

I may update this list in the future.

That’s all I can really think of right now. Thanks for having me. Click the arrow below for a little bonus:

Welcome! Any particular novels you’d like to read eventually?

Welcome to the study log crew, home of the finest people on this Internet (as well as slightly less reputable folk such as myself  ). I’m working toward the winter N3 as well, hopefully this year goes well for both of us and we can have many rejoicings with fellow test-passers!

Howdy! For now, I’m going a little leisurely with what’s available at my school’s library. Lots of picture books and the Ghibli recap books. Recently, I’ve been reading a book in a popular children’s series called 「こまったさんのスパゲッティ」. It’s quite charming. I’d eventually wanna start tackling the Kirby light novels I keep passing by in the library.

I’m a big fan of One Piece, too, so I’d like to get to the level where I can enjoy it again. I used to read the translated tankoban at my local library, but I lost access to those after moving to Japan. Here’s hoping I can make my way out of Impel Down someday soon…

As for novels, I’m a bit of a slow reader, so anything 200pgs plus is quite intimidating… however, I’d love to read the book Night is Short, Walk On Girl some day. It was adapted into a very impressively animated film by one of my favorite anime studios, Science Saru, so I’d love to read the original story.

Thanks for the warm welcome! You definitely seem to be a bit further along the WaniKani road than I am, but here’s hoping we can match pace a bit in time for N3. I hope to join the party when you pass this year!

If I pass, the party will be open to all! (Except maybe me, we have to have some standards after all).

Are you doing any grammar studies or have any background with that? I tried the N4 last year and while I did kind of try to speedrun grammar for that, it was too much to bite off where I was at the time. I’m working through MaruMori more reasonably slow now for grammar plus doing reading and listening since those were two more of my multiple weak points, so hopefully this year I’m in a much better place. If not, it’s just a test but it would be nice validation.

Everyone gets their level ups differently. Sometimes a level up is the light at the end of a 200+ review marathon. Other times, you get jumpscared by 80 new lessons after doing 5 reviews on the last train of the night. Regardless of how or when it arrives, it’s always a nice surprise. I wish every the best of luck continuing their own journeys. I’m gonna enjoy the sakura while its in season. The willow ones are my favorite
