We were at a Japanese cafe where they were selling a t-shirt with the name of the city (Melbourne) screen printed in katakana. The people working there tried to explain to us it was a joke, in that what ought be メルボルン was printed as メルボルソ but we’re still not quite clear on whether the joke is just a silly deliberate misspelling/typo of similar characters or there is something else to it, in maybe the altered meaning or context?
We’re probably overthinking it, but curious anyhow

Was it sold by a place called papirica? That’s the only reference I could find online.
Papirica (パピリカ) itself is a misspelling of パプリカ, so it would make sense that they add misspellings in other stuffs as well on purpose.

I get the feeling this is the likely scenario, but I would love it if there is an actual joke here 
yeah it was from there - hadn’t made that connection but makes sense!
