Hello everyone!! I am just starting out learning the language and I was wondering if I could have any help with where to start. I have learned katakana and hiragana but I am not sure what the best methods are for beginners. Any advice is useful, thank you so much!!
Hi friend! I recommend checking out the WaniKani creators’ website, it’s got a great curation of sources and posts on a number of topics, including a suggested path for how to start learning Japanese here. I don’t think there’s any singular method that’ll get you to where you want to go, it’s all just what works for you, what you like, and what you think you’ll stick to in the long term! If you like WaniKani’s SRS (spaced repetition system) formatting, I’d also recommend Bunpro as they cover both vocab and grammar while using SRS. If you like textbooks, Genki is always a fan favorite!
Personally, I’d also recommend just consuming a lot of Japanese content early on (whether dramas, podcasts, books, etc) and trying to produce early on (talking or writing)! If there’s a community of learners where you are that are doing a language table or something, or even just engaging in the online forums here can be super beneficial and motivating since it can be hard and discouraging at times while learning Japanese at first.
Hope this helps and welcome to the forums!
Hello! In addition to what maurice620 said, if you want to have a little more freedom in learning stuff–try Anki! It’s a great customizable SRS flashcard builder–or you can import community made ones–and it’s also free*
*unless you’re downloading the mobile apps…
Anyways, it’s good for memorizing stuff that’s not in WaniKani or other programs–basically stuff that you choose to learn separately.
Welcome to the community!
Hi, welcome!
My advice, adding on to maurice620, would be to make it enjoyable. If you watch Youtube often, find some Japanese YouTubers. If you like reading, read some manga or other Japanese material. Add Japanese to things you enjoy!
Also, don’t be intimidated by how fast native speakers talk. Listen to it, even if you don’t understand. You will get accustomed to how it sounds and will be able to identify words easier, especially when you learn more. Maybe for starters, use subtitles to try to read along and identify words in their speech.
This community has much great advice to offer!
Enjoy your studies!
