Genki I study group [home thread]

That’s really helpful, thank you! Didn’t know there was so much additional stuff outside of the three apps.

Just do your best to be consistent with wk and you will be at a higher level when we start : )

Thanks! I am glad that you liked my ideas. It is your thread, so I don’t want to step on your toes. I have seen some of the things that work here – giving people a spot to monitor their progress should help to have a better success rate.

I have been mulling over that idea of having a separate thread just for having dialogues from the book. That way the dialogues wouldn’t junk up conversation about chapters.

English explanations would be in brackets. The actual conversation would always be in Japanese, using only the words and structures at the level we are at.
So, I would post :

[dialogue p.38. It is 4:30 in the afternoon, but I don’t know what time it is. ]
すみません.いまなんじですか’.

someone else might reply later:
じゅうろくじはんです.

…and the conversation would continue, with anyone replying. There could be many dialogues at once. It would replace classroom dialogue practice.

In my mind I think that it should work, but it may be a dismal failure. The only way to find out is to try.

Neat! I may stop in here and there, we’re currently on Chapter 9 in Genki I (TBH I should be in Genki II, but skipped back a class because of my Master’s program and being horrible at conjugation). We’re on summer break so it would give me a bit of a brush up on earlier items. Unfortunately I have my Master’s class on Thursday nights

Here’s my advice having been using this book for a while now:

  • Each chapter is divided into subsections, and the book itself is divided into two sections (first half is grammar, second half is kanas/kanji). It’s not a very linear book that way.
  • Get REALLY comfortable with your kanas, folks, it will make things way faster!
  • You definitely don’t need to start at any particular wani-level, kanji starts a few chapters in, but it will definitely give you a leg up! It’s also going to give you on-yomi and kun-yomi simultaneously, and in a completely different order than you’re used to

Does edition matter? I have the 2011 Second edition. Didn’t know if there was a preferred edition or if it even mattered.

I’ve been using the 2nd edition too, I think that is the newest edition so hopefully we are good.

This is a really interesting idea, I think maybe we should just let the group start normally and after a week or two do a poll and see if people want a separate thread for conversations. Also you’re not ‘stepping on my toes’ lol, but I would prefer to make the conversation thread myself if it comes to that. : ) thanks again for the ideas and help

Is the audio material dialogues that are in the book or vocab? 15-20% sounds like a big cut but I think I can still attempt this if that’s the case.

Thanks! I took my first Japanese class this last semester and we learned pronunciation during class. My teacher also teaches linguistics and I think that’s why he took special note of how the sounds are produced. I’m mainly concerned with my grasp of grammar and want to learn more vocab as well so I think this will still be great challenge!

Oh ok! I thought that might be the case and while I would like the audio, I haven’t seen that as a separate purchase option. I’ll just use the books for now then. Thanks for clarifying!

I am excited to join! I have had the Genki books for many years, and would occasionally start to work through it by myself (with the help of my wife, who speaks Japanese) but never get much further than chapter 3.

Then WaniKani came along and I have been more studious in my Japanese studying than ever. But I have been realizing I needed to pick up the grammar once again. I saw this post and knew it was exactly what I needed. Enough to get me to actually post a reply! I usually…lurk.

Heyy my books arrived yesterday! That was pretty quick I think. But now I am officially ready.

Honestly the timing couldn’t be more perfect for me, as I only recently reached level 10. I already ordered the books a while ago (along with Japanese the Manga Way and some reference books from Tofugu’s list), so they should be here soon. This thread is going to be a huge help since I no longer have to worry about undertaking a textbook meant for classes alone. So you can definitely count me in!

Just a quick FYI for everybody doing this. Kitsun is currently free to join and has a Complete Genki Vocabulary deck, I’ve found it very useful and a good way to get a headstart on those vocabs before we begin in a couple of weeks.

Hey everyone! I’m almost done with Genki 1, but would like to refresh myself on the material. My Japanese is still really bad and would love people to study with.

I have been using the free MIT Japanese courses to supplement my studies. Here’s a link: https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/global-studies-and-languages/21g-501-japanese-i-fall-2012/

This resource has been really helpful for me and I hope it’s helpful for you as well
