🎮 Game Club // Playing Earthbound / Mother 2

Will probably be a rulebreaker and play the PS1 one if this gets picked; despite changes I think I can hang in with people broadly. I’m glad you went with Marie; I’d be happy to do this one!

I’ve never been drawn to atelier (never knew anything about them) but your post makes me intrigued :eyes:

Also might as well start the poll a day early since looks like that was the last nomination we were waiting for

I’ve never played an Atelier game either but been meaning to for a while. They sound super laid back and chill relative to most RPGs.

Poll #1

Closes 15/02/26

Rank the games by your most preferred!

  • Pokemon (gen 1)
  • Boku no Natsuyasumi
  • デジモンサバイバー・Digimon Survive
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
  • Paper Mario
  • Deltarune
  • Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
  • Racing Lagoon
  • 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim / 十三機兵防衛圏
  • Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg
0 voters
  • See the top post for links to each nomination post
  • Keep in mind console availability and price ranges for yourself

I think Atelier got duplicated in place of 13 Sentinels

I could feel it in my bones I was gonna do something wrong on the poll

Polls are hard; I totally understand.

This may be a very beginner question … but where/how do you go about accessing these games in Japanese?

I have a Switch that I haven’t even used a great deal in English, nothing yet in Japanese. I can get a handful of these games in the online Switch store in English, but they don’t have a Japanese language option on them. The only one that did was Deltarune.

Any pointers would be much appreciated!

So some of these games will either require original hardware or an emulator to access. For example ぼくのなつやすみ is on PS1 so you’ll likely need an emulator unless you have a PS1 lying around. Some games have language options like Deltarune. Sometimes on Switch there’s no in game option but you can switch by changing the system language - in these cases the game will list Japanese as a supported language on the store page or on the box. However some games require a Japanese copy to access the Japanese text, so these require a Japanese eshop account and if you don’t have a Japanese card then you’ll need to purchase gift card codes to get it. This is a slightly more involved process but I’ve gone through it before and I’m sure other people here have too and will be willing to help guide newer people through it

Long story short, it depends on the game but there are methods for all of these games that people can help with

50% off on Steam today

I’ve got to say, the suspense of which will win is killing me. I’m looking forward to seeing which comes out on top

A four way tie with ranked choice with 22 votes? Is there a round limit? Did they all enter the round with the same preference and it doesn’t go to lower preferences for a tie breaker? I’m a little surprised, but hard to understand without the data.

Well I guess the only thing to be done is run all 4 of them at once

Or schedule all of them now… after each other :face_with_peeking_eye:
I’m joking, of course

It’s a pity you can’t see how people voted. I also wonder what went wrong here - possibly the results of lots of choices staying at “Abstain”? (How are those treated anyway? Does “Abstain” equal to “Least favourite”? It’s so hard to wrap your mind around ranked polls.)

Either way, a four-way tie is definitely not the result I’d expect from 22 voters voting on 10 things with the ranked poll method. I was looking forward to see how well it’ll do since it’s barely used at all, but maybe it isn’t a good idea for club choices after all

And since I can’t interpret the results I’d suggest doing a traditional poll with all of them, not just a tie-breaker poll with the four “winners” here. It feels like something went wrong here. Unless someone has more insight into what is going on?

I’m…confused. Where did the Rounds come from? Were we supposed to come back and vote again at some point? I voted once at the beginning, and assumed that was it…

I hadn’t looked at this thread for a couple of weeks, so completely missed most of the nominations and the poll, but funnily enough me and a few other Deltarune fans are currently planning on playing that game book-club-style in Japanese starting next month on a different site. I don’t really have time to commit to playing multiple different Japanese games at once, but if Deltarune is run, I’ll try and participate here too since I’ll already be playing it :grinning_cat:

Also, I’ve never heard of Boku no Natsuyasumi and 13 Sentinels, but they both sound super interesting :sun: Even if I can’t participate in the club for those while it’s going on, I’ll definitely have to check them out on my own sometime. I get the feeling this thread is going to turn into a good Japanese game recommendations thread as time goes by and more nomination periods happen.

(sorry, this is unrelated to the current poll weirdness. four winners is a really strange outcome… it’s weird also that the winners are under the “eliminated” heading for round three? the format for the results doesn’t make any sense)

No, don’t worry - you did everything correctly, you just needed to vote one time. The “rounds” are just how ranked polls work internally:

I’m surprised we have ties because isn’t this the point of ranked choice, that it can go on forever? I guess with 10 options maybe the algorithm struggles?

But yeah, I’m very surprised at the outcome, personally..

I mean, it can’t go on forever if a round ends with 2+ remaining choices at the same level. All of them get eliminated at the same time, so all of them tie. Which, apparently, somehow happened here with no less than four choices in round 3.

I’m not smart enough to just quickly simulate that in my head, and I don’t care enough to do it on paper, but my intuition points to “lots of people voted for only one or two things and abstained on all others”. That does seem like something that people would do in a club like this, and it feels like something ranked polls might struggle with.

No clue how these polls work but I can proudly say I properly ranked them all

I really want to know what we’re playing though! Already waited in suspense this long.

Whatever happens I’m proud of little Boku making a top 4 finish.
