Frankie's log of carrying on. 🪱

:rainbow: Hello everyone :rainbow:

This is my log for studying Japanese. I’ve noticed a trend where i would study lots for a month or two then stop for like five months or so and then become interested again (even if I would swear I’d never touch Japanese again). I have (unsurprisingly) been diagnosed with ADHD.

So this is my log of carrying on slowly and not stopping.

This time starting has been a little different, instead of obsessively doing tons Ive found I’ve managed to have a softer slower start. Im hoping this will let me carry on longer.

past experience of Japanese
  • Genki 1 and 2 about 10 years ago (yes i have been in this stop start cycle that long lol)
  • playing some 3ds games and reading some easy manga in Japanese
  • Bunpro n5 finished and n4 started
  • Level 8 on wanikani

My goals for the day to day (for now):

  • get wanikani reviews down to zero (or study for 10 minutes)
  • Get bunpro reviews down to zero (or study for 5 minutes)
  • Read in Japanese for 3 minutes a day

This might seem like not enough but i will probably do more day to day. I just want to keep the minimum amount not overwhelming so i can feel happy when i keep going, while also giving the opportunity to do more.
(Eg. Most of the time I don’t read for just 3 minutes, i read for more, but if i set out to read for more I likely wouldn’t do it)

My short term goals (2 - 4 months):

  • Get to wanikani level 10
  • Get a textbook to brush up on n5 content and start studying it.
  • finish my daily goals 90% of the time

My long term goals (1 year or so) :

  • Read a kids book in Japanese
  • Take the Jlpt n5 for fun
  • Finish bunpro n4
  • Finish a manga series in Japanese

I’ll probably update this study log once a month or so, but I’ll try to reply to any comments.

Welcome!

I think your plan to just open WK/App etc will make sure you get consistent progress  May you find a rhythm that works for you!

For the manga you might want to check out the yotsuba-absolute-beginners-book-club-home-thread or other book threads that spark your interest :slightly_smiling_face: For a kids book you can look into graded readers, as these still have Kanji.

Hello  thank you for the kind words!

I currently have it set up that whenever i open the app for wanikani or bunpro it links to my tracking app so it tells me how much time I’ve spent. Number go up makes my brain happy at the moment so hopefully it’ll be enough to get a good rhythm.

Im actually currently on よつばと! Volume 4 so maybe i should check out the thread. As for the kids book i currently has one in mind and it has a decent amount of kanji in it. Its called 三毛猫ホームズの宝さがし It seems a little dialogue heavy for my liking but it will have to do as i have a physical copy so i should give it a decent go.
