Font enlargement tools?

#1

Are there any apps, browser extensions, or other tools available for enlarging Japanese text in most internet applications?  Due to a visual impairment, I have a hard time reading reading the standard size Japanese text on most websites (especially kanji).  While there are quite a few things for enlarging either an entire page, everything on screen, or everything near the mouse cursor, I’d prefer to just enlarge the Japanese text if possible.

I feel your pain. I have a visual impairment too and would like a good solution other than windows. Magnifier

Browsers treat Japanese kanji like any other text. So just use whatever method you use for increasing the size of English text and you’ll be fine.

The method somewhat works, but has some issues.  On sites with both types of text, it seems to choose one size for the entire page rather than apply the settings as each language come up.  Since I use different sizes of text for English and Japanese, this creates problems with either the Japanese not being enlarged or all of the English being somewhat obnoxious to deal with.

(on an interesting note, modifying Japanese will affect the dashboard (see Apraxas’s picture), but it won’t affect anything typed in the forums).

CNTRL + / - works in a similar fashion - getting Japanese to a reasonable level often messes with other things on the page.

Windows Magnifier isn’t a bad tool, but it can be annoying at times.

Yeah, as others have said, I usually just Ctrl-Plus it up to a reasonable size, then Ctrl-0 to reset when I’m back on an English page.

Even worse are the kanji in old RPGs, where often they don’t have anywhere near enough pixels to show the full thing. “Miracle” (驚異) took me a while to figure out…

That’s actually a good idea, I’m not visually impaired but it can be kinda annoying to try and make out those tiny Kanji on the screen sometimes. I felt like writing a small userscript for this that I’ll probably be using myself from now on. You’ll need Greasemonkey for Firefox to run the script; there’s also Tampermonkey for Chrome for running userscripts but I have not tested it.

I enlarges any Japanese text by 30% (not just Kanji, because that looked really weird in combination with Hiragana). Hope this helps! It’s disabled on WK by default because it seems to break the Kanji pages (it won’t show the progress bars of the Kanji for some reason).
