Just got my first burn. It was just some level one radicals but its still a small accomplishment. Is it bad that i am nervous that i will forget the things that i have burned?
I donât think forgetting things should be an issue. Anything important will come up in your immersion. Probably a good idea to have an anki deck going though at some point so you can keep important vocab in the mix after youâre done with WK
I wouldnât worry too much about this.
You can think of it like this: youâll learn thousands of items on WK. Not all of them are as common or frequent as counting from 1-10. As you start to read, watch and play media in Japanese youâll encounter some of these items. But not all. The ones you donât see for a long time you might forget, but then again, if you do see them later on, they should be easy to re-learn.
So, what Iâm trying to say is that if you happen to forget some items, thatâs perfectly normal. The items you see and use regularly, however, you should have no problem retaining.
As for the names of radicalsâŠtheyâre merely a means to an end - learning to recognize them is the goal to help you parse kanji. At the end of the day, what you call them, is less important.
Congratulations!
Youâll probably forget or misremember things youâve burned, especially on later levels. Itâs unavoidable, and youâll still remember a lot of what youâve learned, so itâs not worth worrying about.
Wanikani is more of a crutch in order to learn to read. The reading and immersion is the real learning process. Imagine WK as riding a bike with training wheels, ârealâ bike riding comes from actually reading. You will forget quite a bit if you donât get into reading, but not nearly as much as you fear for. Donât worry about it.
i reset from level 40 to level 1 and i was surprised to find i have forgotten nothing so far. just got to level 4.
also, WK is made in such a way you keep reencountering the radicals and kanji in other vocab so youâd only risk forgetting burned, uncommon vocab from the beginning i think.
After seeing everyoneâs replies, i feel a little less anxious about forgetting things. Thanks for the support.
