I didn’t get a lot of studying done since last time, and my online classes start tomorrow, so I had to prepare for that one instead. Still, I somehow finished three more chapters in my grammar (work)books. Since they start with the basics but also cover some more advanced usages, it has been a nice mix of “ah yes, now I remember” and “wow, never heard this before, but now some things begin to make sense”.
Modern Japanese Grammar (Guide): 9/89
Modern Japanese Grammar (Workbook): 9/89
Pronouns and demonstratives done, particles are next - and that’s a topic I can’t practice often enough
Hi everyone!
I didn’t do much the past few months, because I ended up having depression, and just now I’m slowly getting better.
I didn’t do much for Japanese during that time (honestly, I didn’t do much for myself in general). But, almost two months ago, I started to study with a teacher! Right now we are reviewing N5 and N4 grammar.
We started using 日本語能力試験問題集 N5文法スピードマスター to do that, and we already did 91 pages. I have to review quite a few grammar points on my own, but I can’t find time and motivation right now. I hope after finishing some projects I’m doing for my studies, I will manage to focus more on Japanese.
I know that I wasn’t supposed to add another book to the list, but it is what it is
When life gets a little bit better and easier, I will be coming back to Tobira.
I guess that for a lot of people on this thread life is getting on the way of studying. I would love to read more about your progress (in this challenge, or in other things), and to remind you that if you don’t do progress for a day, a week, or a month, it’s ok. The only important thing is to come back eventually to what you want to do,
Absolutely this! No matter what your goals are, they’re always dependent on the underlying person - so if you need time to take care of yourself and your life, that’s just as important as doing X number of lessons. Probably more so, in fact.
Well… let’s just say I fell of grammar studies for a bit, but decided to pick this back up.
Realized that without the appendices I had actually some 30 pages left until I finished so I added some 15 more today and reached the weekly goal.
Next week I’m going to finish it since the appendices are just the same stuff arranged in alphabetical order
Progress:
Tobira: 23/362
Japanese Particles Workbook: 135/157
I made some progress with the quartet workbook 1. But there are still so many exercises to do. It seems by doing the exercises my japanese is slowly improving.
Did some more pages than the usual 15, but I finished the Japanese Particles workbook! The last 10 or so pages were all sentence-ending particles so quite easy to get through more.
Definitely helped me, I can see myself using it in the future as a little dictionary to check up/refresh all the various uses of a specific particle.
Now I need to decide what to do next. There’s technically Tobira to finish… But I feel like I covered all the N3 material it seems to cover already in other places, and I would like to try to read more through more technical books that go in depth on specific topics because that’s how I feel I learn best.
One part of japanese grammar I’m still REALLY shaky on is verb conjugations, so I want to read something about that…
So from now on, I think I will try to do even just a couple of pages from Tobira every week (still better than nothing), and the usual 15 pages a week of something else.
And let’s have that something else be the book “Japanese verbs at a glance” by Naoko Chino and see how it goes!
Progress:
Tobira: 23/362
Japanese Particles Workbook: 157/157 ✓
Japanese verbs a at glance: 0/150
It’s so great to hear!!! I’m glad you are slowly getting better and better!
That’s so great! How was the book, did you enjoy it?
As for me, I keep progressing slowly the book I’m studying with my teacher, and when I have a 2 month break from my formal studies, I will be focusing on Japanese! I hope I will make great progress with Tobira then!
Here’s my home post so that I actually start working on textbooks for real.
My current goal is to start and finish Genki II. I already did Genki I, but I’d like to finish the second book before joining a book club for real. It took me waaaaay too long to finish the first book, so I’d like to make it faster this time around.
If I can complete one lesson per week at the very least, I may be done in September.
