Finished chapter 15 of Genki II . I need to do the workbook exercises this weekend (For each chapter I do all but the review exercise, I save that one for the end when I do The Big Review.)
On Sunday I’m hoping to start adding any vocab from chapter 16 to my deck. Then it’s onto that chapter next week! Though, I have to travel for a wedding at the end of the week , so it might take a bit longer than my usual pacing to finish chapter 16.
Almost forgot to update this week! I barely study any Japanese, because my programming school have some absurd deadlines, and before I do every project of the level, I won’t be able to study properly. However, I did manage to do my 15 pages! I just hope soon I won’t have to do all the pages in a single day.
Week 2 (7 lessons) of Sou Matome N5 done. 5 weeks to go.
I concentrate more on reading than text book studying now, but I’m in no rush. I think it will be good to go through Sou Matome N5 and N4 before I really start studying again.
Did my 15 weekly pages! 15 and a little more actually, just to finish an exercise, but I’m going to still count it as exercise.
More particles workbook, things got a bit tricky with some exercise that I will have to review why my answers were wrong…
Progress:
Tobira: 23/362
Japanese Particles Workbook: 45/192
This is a great idea! I think I’ll join from tomorrow.
I have
Shinkanzen Master Grammar N3
Shinkanzen Master Grammar N2
Shinkanzen Master Vocab N2
I’m mainly interested in completing the grammar ones. I want to do both but idk if I have the time before the next JLPT. I want to give N2 another try. I think this time, I can make it, although I am worried about the time I have to devote to studying for it. I might prioritize N2 over N3 for that reason. I still think I would definitely pass N3, but N2 is what I need.
If anyone’s interested in being study buddies, please let me know.
Hey, it’s ok, there is nothing more important than you, so don’t feel pressured to do things, when you just can’t because of external factors. Also, it’s always an option to lower your personal goal! Even 1 page or 1 exercise count towards progress. In any case, I hope that when the weather gets better, you’ll join this little challenge.
I have a ton of books too. It’s just a matter of choosing what to prioritize and ignoring the rest (I have it all in the storage room to not get distracted from my main book). It would be nice to choose if you want to do grammar, vocab, something else… and the level. And if you can’t choose rationally, just pick a random one. Eventually you will finish all of them. But the important thing is just to get started.
So choose (not necessarily) wisely, and just join with whatever.
Nice progress! I cheated a little bit and did my pages today (monday), But at least I did them ;D

Oh, I am definitely still in this challenge! It’s impossible to work in a motel with a dog who thinks she can bark her head off at every sound she hears. HA!! Anyway back home now and more motivated than ever. I did do a little bit on the next section, so that’s progress. Dog behaves much better at home! So on to the next section. We still have 11 months to go. I’ll be well able to finish my book by the end of the year, I am confident.
Logging my 15 weekly pages again! I’m really happy with this first month of progress, it really adds up to do even just a bit every week, this thread was such a great idea!
I look forward to sitting down and knocking out a couple pages off the particles workbook every couple evenings!
Progress:
Tobira: 23/362
Japanese Particles Workbook: 60/192
Hey, guys!
I’m so glad to see everyone progressing. I was a little bit off for a few weeks because I ended up really sick, and didn’t do much. I’m feeling weak, but I’m not sick anymore, so I’ll be coming back to this challenge little by little.
I won’t be trying to do more than 15 pages to make up for this past few weeks. Which is a little reminder for y’all, that you don’t need to make up for anything if you don’t study, any progress is good progress.
I ended up starting Tobira 2, because I didn’t have the physical copy of my Tobira 1 for a year, and it was really uncomfortable to study with the digital copy.
I kinda know the grammar of Tobira 1, so it’s not a big problem. There a few words I don’t know here and there, but it’s the only problem I’ve encountered 'till now.
Last week I advanced until page 27. This week is heavy on grammar, so I’ll be trying to advance a little bit everyday, and not do everything on the last day as always
Another 15 pages done, slightly later than usual this week because of a busy weekend. I may go over this book again when I’m finished and write down summaries of all the particles divided by each particle to really confront and nail down all the different usages.
The book divides them by frequency of use instead, so for example you get は as one of the very first particles, then I got it again at page 120 or so as using it to put emphasis to the maximum/minimum value a number can have, which is not something I had ever seen properly pointed out before

Tobira: 23/362
Japanese Particles Workbook: 120/192
I really like this idea - and the revelation that I’m not the only one with way too many unfinished (and even un-started) textbooks!
Currently, I’m not using a classical textbook, but rather a combination of a grammar/usage guide and its correspondent workbook. It has 89 chapters on structures and functions, some of them quite long or detailed (9 pages alone on “compliments”, divided by who is complimenting whom in which situation…). As long as it makes sense, I plan to work through them one by one. No time limit, just staying consistent and hopefully finishing the books at some point!
Modern Japanese Grammar (Guide): 6/89
Modern Japanese Grammar (Workbook): 6/89
I might add more at some point, but I plan to sign up for language classes, and we’ll definitely be using a textbook there. Overdoing it with resources and then not sticking with anything has been one of my biggest issues so far, and I’d like to avoid it this time
