That’s me too! I decided to just start at the beginning. If I have done some pages before then I have surely forgotten by now. Repetition never hurt anyone!
First week (7 lessons) of Sou Matome N5 done! 6 weeks go go.
N5 is just repetition, but I think it’s good to go back to basics once in a while. More importantly, now I’m going to finish the book, and then put it away! I don’t like to have so many books half done.
…… there are answers in the back
@VitaGtm さん、ありがとうございます。
I have the minna no nihongo series beginner and intermediate including all the question/answer sets. I did the beginner I and II with my tutor and am redoing them including all the questions sets. It is time consuming but very worthwhile.
I like this thread and will keep tabs on our progress.
If you get stuck with stuff hit me up and I can get the answer for you.
Do you have the listening exercises? They are very good. You can download them from the publisher’s website.
Thank you! I was also trying to figure this out
Great challenge idea! I have been working on Genki I with an Italki tutor, but I’m sorry to say I haven’t been actually studying the textbook very attentively. Doing flashcards here and on Anki is way more fun for me- textbook studying is so staid.
I am going to resolve to actually read all the way through the Genki I chapters and will hopefully follow along with 15 pages per week.

Plan to work through a couple of pages of the fifteen Tobira pages for this week in the following days.
Meanwhile, I remembered that I also have the Japanese Particles Workbook, and very quickly went through the first 15 pages + exercise 1. (は vs が)
I like that the book introduces the particles based on how often they are used, and example sentences use only already introduced particles.
Progress:
Japanese Particles Workbook: pages 15/192
Oh, I love that book! It’s one of those books I really want to own! But until I finish at least tobira, I won’t be buying more books. When you advance more, tell me more about your experience with that book! I would love to read it
I decided to Take a Break from Grammar in January and concentrate on vocabulary (verbs + conjugation).
Had a bit of time today so I managed to finish the first chapter of Tobira. That’s around 23 pages so let’s see if I can actually manage to do a chapter a week… But if not, I’ll try to stick to the page of 15 pages a week.
Trying to go with one chapter a week is exactly what made me give up with it the first time, because I found myself arriving at the weekend at thinking “oh well, I’ve already messed up this week, now I need to catch up to two chapters next week” and so on.
For the rest of the week I want to get ahead with the particle workbook since I really like how it seems to work, pointing out little details about particles, even just the part about が had something I didn’t know about (or at least didn’t know “consciusly”)
Progress:
Tobira: 23/362
Japanese Particles Workbook: 15/192
Do you have a link for the Japanese particles workbook?
I personally found it freely available on The Internet Archive where you can download it in various formats!
I found it.
Joining you with Tobira! I’m working on N5 stuff just to get some repetition, but I should get back to “real” studies too.
Yup, the chapters are heavy! I think one chapter per two weeks is more doable.
Think that the 15 pages are across all the books you need to use, and don’t push yourself.
The first 2 chapters of tobira are shorter than the rest, and the concepts become more challenging with each chapter. And every chapter is packed with grammar. If you were immersing or studying grammar with other sources, it’s going to be fine. But if grammar is your weak point, just don’t push yourself. I think it’s important to not rush into these kinds of things.
You did a really good job this week with both books tho! I admire the dedication!
I, on the other hand, only did 4 pages for now (yes, I’m counting the vocab pages; this week was hard ) Tomorrow, (hopefully) I’ll have some time and I’ll do the remaining pages.
I’m already familiar with most grammar points in Tobira, I bought it because I wanted to review things more in depth, so that’s why I managed more than planned this week. But yeah I will definitely take it more slowly the following weeks. Better to go slower than burn out and drop it again!
It does feel cool to crack this big book almost completely in Japanese open and slowly work through each page!
Working on Chapter 7 JFZ this week.
