Yeah the audio is not the issue, the fact that you have to keep up with it on the other hand…

One thing that can help, is to find a playthrough on youtube, then you can watch the scene again and pause as you like (that’s what I did when I was transcribing FF2 and there were scenes you couldn’t pause)

I just checked with @JupiterJesus’s spreadsheet and my week 1 proposal would add up to around 6k characters total (including a lot of optional dialogue) which is more than anything we’ve had so far but not by a whole lot, we’ve had a few weeks in the 4k~5k range. The current Week 7 of the FF3 club has 4.5k characters for instance.

Based on the data provided by @LazyWerebear I guess that it also makes sense to aim for a moderate average character bump if we want to keep the ten-ish weeks per game pace a little longer:

FF5 is ā€œonlyā€ 40% more characters than FF3.

I think 4~5k chars/week average should be a decent target for the Super Famicom games. It will let us progress decently fast without massively increasing the reading load.

On the other hand as I said before I intend to focus more on finding good weekly ā€œepisodesā€ for the stopping points, not focusing primarily on character count, so expect quite a lot of variation.

I agree that this sounds nicer!
I dropped playing the PR for FF3, playing the 3D version is too nice. I think I will grab the 3D remake for this one too.

Wait, there is a 3DS version of FF4?

It was originally released for the original DS (which the 3DS should be compatible with), so sorta. It also got ported to Mobile and PC.

I started recording my play sessions when I saw windows snipping tool just has a record button right next to the screenshot, something which was either recently added, or my eyes had glossed over. Easy enough to play through without worrying, then go back and review the video for the stuff I missed. FFIV starts to have so many lengthy cutscenes that only play the one time, compared to previous entries.

I discussed it a bit earlier in this thread.

I don’t know how you could do any less. If you ended any earlier, there would be no actual gameplay.

Week 1 of FF1 didn’t even include the Chaos Shrine! Just chilling around Cornelia.

How far we’ve come.

Any estimate when the start date will be at this point?

The FF3 club’s final week will be posted on June 5. So if we add a one week break after that it should be June 19th.

I’m waiting to see how the final week of FF3 is received by the participants before setting the date in stone, but there’s a good chance it’ll play out that way.

Can someone remind me of region locking on the DS? 3DS was region locked, but DS wasn’t, and you can play Japanese DS games on non Japanese 3DSs, correct?

I’m considering taking the plunge and getting a copy of the DS version for IV..

No region locking for DS games on either DS or 3DS. And for 3DS games, not if your console is modded.

I’m mostly lazy, and I’d probably just pick up a Japanese 3DSXL if I cared enough

Thanks for the confirmation though… I think I’ll grab the DS game for 4 then…

Since the final FF3 thread will be posted this week, I guess we should have enough visibility to decide if we’re ready to start 4 on the 20th after a one week break:

FF4 club start date
  • June 20th
  • I would prefer starting later
0 voters

The poll is anonymous.

For those would prefer starting later, don’t hesitate to tell use more. Would starting in July help? Even later? It’s there a conflict with some other club?

Starting that week will be a bit tough for me, but I can always start early if that’s the start date. I voted, but I don’t want to influence things too much since I haven’t been participating this whole time.

It would be really helpful to have the first week or two of the schedule sooner than later, in case I (or others) decide to start early. As this will be my first text dense game in Japanese, I know that if I start late I’ll never catch up.

I’m going to let the poll run for a few more days before taking a decision but if it turns out that a third or so of respondents want to start later, I’ll postpone until July.

I also don’t want to wait much longer than that because we have so many games to go through and I would like to reach FF7 before 2028…

Personally I’m just stretching myself a little too thin with game clubs I want to participate in! I won’t complain if y’all get started in June, though. Worst case is I let myself lag behind and fully catch up after Xenogears is done in July. FF4 is an old favorite so I’ll definitely be playing one way or the other
