# Feature request: toggle furigana on examples

It appears this was suggested as early as 2014. The context sentences, and sometimes the common word combinations, sometimes contain readings I’m not familiar with, or even kanji that I haven’t studied yet. I’d really like to be able to toggle furigana on these to ensure that I learn proper readings without having to plug them into [jisho.org](http://jisho.org) or something.

+1, I second that!
However you can already do this today by using a browser extension.
I use Furiganize on Zen (Firefox-based), but there’s others for both Firefox and Chromium browsers.

Note that while they’re mostly correct, they may sometimes generate inaccurate readings, so keep an eye out for that.
Still a proper built-in option would be great, particularly if the vocab hasn’t been studied before and/or doesn’t even exist on WK. I found many of these, which are used in Context Sentences but aren’t on WK, and have somewhat non-intuitive readings e.g. onyomi + kunyomi for a jukugo word, or an exceptional reading.

An alternative to @skaldebane is Yomitan chrome/firefox/edge extension which will not only give you the furigana but the definition as well. Just hold down the shift key and point your cursor to what you want.

This really should be added. While there are extensions that can do that, the reading can end up wrong and it sure would be nice if a platform for learning the readings of kanji provided the correct reading so a learner doesn’t have to worry about that happening.

this is still bothering me constantly, especially in the common word combinations where I can never be sure where rendaku applies. some example sentences will have almost as many kanji I’ve never seen as ones I’ve studied. if a free userscript can use the API token to only display readings for kanji I haven’t studied on the NHK website, a _third party website_, why hasn’t this been implemented here? yomitan is helpful, but it’s a joke that a paid service for learning to read kanji doesn’t cover this stuff. I already bought the lifetime membership, but if I hadn’t, I’d be carefully considering whether to renew, or just use anki and study the kyouiku and joyo kanji lists.

Hello,
Just to say that I agree with this request.
It could be really great to be able to toggle show/hide furiganas (hidden by default indeed) on all context examples.
On bunpro it’s available with a shortcut (ctrl+shift+f) and I find that very convenient - no need to use extension.
So, yes.. is it too difficult to implement that ?

I agree that something needs to be done. As a beginner, I always just skip over those context examples because they feel too advanced. They aren’t properly scaffolded into the learning curve.
Something else that would be extremely helpful is having a native speaker read those context sentences. Otherwise, even with the furigana, I’m never sure if I’m saying it like a native speaker would. If there actually was audio, I’d make a point of studying those context sentences and I feel I’d make much more progress.

Ah ? I think the context examples are particularly well done here . I’m almost always able to read them. _Almost_ because yes, you right, sometimes there are some words which are used I did not learn yet - but I encountered this issue a very few times, so it did not bother me too much.
But stills, sometimes I just want to quickly check if I’m not mistaken pronunciation so…could be very _very_ great to display furiganas with a keyboard shortcut…
