[Feature Request] Collect some stats about users' incorrect answers

Thanks for taking the time with this list. I’ll pass it on. We added most of the options you mentioned before except:

  • boy for “〜君”
  • plural for “〜達”
  • electrical appliance for 電子機器

I’ll mention this to our engineers, thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you! Here’s another batch of answers falsely marked incorrect:

  • kanji 示 – display
  • kanji 副 – duplicate
  • word 程 – degree
  • kanji 宮 – princess
  • 特徴 – feature
  • 罰ゲーム – punishment game
  • 区域 – territory, domain

I’ll piggyback off this and mention the counter suffixes aren’t consistent.

〜枚 has ‘flat object’ as the primary reading and ‘flat object counter’ as a secondary meaning.

〜匹 has ‘small animal counter’ as the primary reading however ‘small animals’ is considered incorrect.

I’ll go out on a limb and suggest the other ones don’t follow any consistent ruling either.

個 isn’t even taught as a counter but then used in several vocabs as a counter.

EDIT: Sorry, didn’t mean to reply directly to you!

Thanks for these, we’ll see about adding them.

We added most of these except:

  • “overwork” for 残業, we instead added “overtime work”
  • “good relations” for 仲良し because it refers to the person not the relationship
  • “electronic machinery” for 電子機器
  • “congratulations” for radical 吉
  • “thank you” for 結構, we instead added “no thank you”

Thanks for bringing this up, I’ll forward it over to our content team.

Update: Our team let us know that this is a work in progress already although I’m afraid I can’t give you an ETA right now as we have a few other projects we need to prioritise first.

I have found that many of these issues can be overcome by adding my own definitions. Similar to other users, I have learned a number of Kanji and vocabulary words outside of Wanikani, and those meanings are now my default.
Instead of trying to cover the myriad of different possible english translations for words, I’d like to be able to add my own definition during “Lessons” rather than waiting for the word to appear in my review queue. Often I find myself trying to fly through reviews and I get words that I know “wrong.” This requires me to wait and add the definition when it pops back up. If I’m moving quickly, this slows my progress and ends up increasing the amount of time spent reviewing words that I am already very familiar with.
Being able to input my own definition during the lesson process would help reduce friction.

That functionality is getting added very soon.

Thank you! Here I go again:

  • kanji 程 – degree
  • 大勢 – masses
  • kanji 営 – occupation
  • 掛かる – to take (srsly, it’s the main meaning)
  • 無我夢中 – losing control, being absorbed
  • 見渡す – to take an extensive look
  • kanji 望 – wish

Thanks, I’ll get these checked and let you know what we add.

Thank you! Lemme continue:

  • 外面 – external appearance
  • 不潔 – unclean
  • 対応 – reaction
  • 〜宅 – one’s house
  • 軍人 – military personnel
  • 混乱する – to be in disorder
  • 続々 – in a series
  • 被る – to be covered
  • 表情 – expression
  • kanji 秀 – surpass
  • word 程 – degree
  • radical 奇 – strange
  • radical 道 – path
  • 修理 – fixing
  • 裁判 – judgement
  • 迷う – to be perplexed
  • kanji 率 – ratio
  • 悪口 – saying bad words, slur
  • 周年 – whole year
  • kanji 展 – unfold
  • 結局 – finally
  • 無我夢中 – being absorbed in, totally absorbed
  • 向ける – to turn
  • 故障 – fault
  • kanji 締 – tie
  • radical 昔 – old times
  • kanji 睡 – sleep
  • kanji 康 – sane (it’s a Heisig mnemonic)
  • kanji 攻 – attack
  • 鮮やか – fresh
  • 停止 – halt
  • 性病 – sexual disease
  • 領域 – region
  • kanji 俳 – actor
  • word 印 – stamp (or at least please add a tip that WaniKani is looking for meaning for another reading)
  • kanji 張 – lengthen
  • kanji 抜 – slip out
  • 独立 – self-reliance
  • kanji 武 – warrior
  • 対策 – measure
  • kanji 完 – completion
  • 非常 – unusual
  • 自愛 – narcissism
  • 置き場 – place to put
  • 修士 – master’s
  • 折角 – at great pains
  • kanji 積 – amass
  • 触る – to irritate
  • kanji 寄 – draw near
  • kanji 診 – examine
  • 出席 – presence
  • 発展する – to unfold
  • 見極める – to identify
  • 誘惑する – to entice, to lure
  • word 靴 – boots

“Invite” was added to 招 and “passage of time” was added to the allow list for 歴.

  • 大勢 only describes “a large number” (of people) whereas masses refers to “the ordinary people”
  • 掛かる: When it takes on the meaning of “to take” it is usually written in kana so we are rejecting this for now.
  • 無我夢中 : We didn’t add “losing control,” but added “losing oneself in” as the alternative meaning and added “being absorbed” and “being absorbed in” to the allowlist.
  • 見渡す: We are rejecting this because “to take an extensive look” implies that someone is examining or investigating something in great detail or with a thorough approach. The word 見渡す in Japanese generally means “to look out over a wide area,” or “to survey a scene from a high vantage point.” This implies a panoramic view or a wide-angle perspective, as opposed to a close-up or detailed examination. In this sense, 見渡す is not exactly the same as “to take an extensive look,” which implies a closer and more focused inspection of something.

Thanks for your patience while we look into your other suggestions.

Thank you for the detailed explanation!
There was one more post with suggestions before the one you replied [Feature Request] Collect some stats about users' incorrect answers - #13 by HotAirGun
Just checking you didn’t miss it out

Also there’s an issue with entering in the kanji meaning field its kunyomi reading. There’s no hint that Wanikani expects meaning from me in this case, it just marked wrong.

And there are more suggestions:

  • 早々 – early
  • 構える – to assume a posture
  • kanji 慣 – get used
  • 血管 – vein
  • 段階 – step
  • kanji 岸 – beach
  • kanji 術 – skill
  • 含意 – connotation
  • kanji 景 – view
  • kanji 渇 – dry up

Oh yeah, we got those, you can see them in our update on the 23rd of March

I’ll add these to the list.

I have just tested this, as well as on a few other kanji and it seems to be working just fine, do you maybe have any scripts installed which could be interfering?

With these, we have added the following and are still considering the others but they require a little more discussion before we decide:

不潔 – unclean → :white_check_mark: Added "unclean” to the allowlist.
対応 – reaction: rejecting this as “reaction” is more close to 反応
軍人 – military personnel → :white_check_mark: Added "military personnel” as an alternative meaning.
混乱する – to be in disorder → :white_check_mark: Added “to be in disorder” as the alternative meaning, added “to be in chaos,” “to get confused,” and “to panic” to the allow list, and updated a context sentence.
続々 – in a series → :white_check_mark: Added “in a series” to the allow list.
修理 – fixing → :white_check_mark: Added "fixing” to the allowlist.
結局 – finally → :white_check_mark: Added “finally” to the allow list.
故障 – fault → :white_check_mark: Added “finally” to the allow list.
鮮やか – fresh → :white_check_mark: added it to the allow list.
停止 – halt → :white_check_mark: Added “stop” and “halt” to the allow list.
word – stamp (or at least please add a tip that WaniKani is looking for meaning for another reading) → :white_check_mark: Added “stamp” to the reading warning list.

You can also always check our weekly updates to see what we decided to add or not.

Thank you for the updates!

I have just tested this, as well as on a few other kanji and it seems to be working just fine

Sorry, but there’s misunderstanding a bit. You’re entering it when WaniKani asks for the reading, I’ve entered “na” when WaniKani asked for the meaning.

And some more suggestions:

  • 心願 – earnest wish
  • kanji 潔 – clean
  • 故障 – malfunctioning, out of service
  • 無茶 – nonsense
  • 寄る – to draw near
  • kanji 突 – sudden
  • 故に – for that reason
  • 所属 – belong
  • 創造力 – creativeness
  • kanji 等 – etc
  • kanji 精 – refined
  • 菓子屋 – snack shop
  • 前景 – front view

Oh I see, you are correct, I missed that the first time around. I’ll make a ticket for it.

I’ll add these also.

Update: Here are some changes we have made, thanks again for the feedback:

早々 - Added “early” as a visible meaning and moved “promptly” to the allow list.
構える - Added “to assume a posture” and “to adopt a posture” to the allow list.
慣 - Added “get used to” to the allow list.
血管 - Added “vein” as an alternative meaning.
段階 - Added “level” and “step” to the allow list.
岸 (kanji) - Added “beach” to the allow list.
術 - Added “skill” to the allow list.
含意 - Added “connotation” as an alternative meaning.
景 - Added “view” to the allow list.
渇 - Made “dry up” the primary meaning.
心願 - Added “earnest wish” to the allow list.
潔 - Added “clean” as an alternative meaning.
故障 - “Malfunctioning” was accepted by our typo leniency system, so we didn’t add it. We did however add “out of service”, “breakdown”, and “failure” to the allow list.
無茶 - We are discussing “nonsense” as a potential allowed meaning but in the meantime we added “unreasonable” and “ridiculous” to the allow list.
寄る - Added “to draw near” to the allow list.
突 - Added “sudden” as an alternative meaning.
故に - Added “for that reason” to the allow list.
所属 - Added “affiliation” as an alternative meaning, as well as “affiliated with” and “affiliation with” to the allow list.
創造力 - Added “creativeness” to the allow list.
精 - Added “refined” to the allow list.

Thank you!

Some more:

  • kanji 診 – diagnose
  • 綺麗 – lovely

  • 自在 – at one’s will
  • radical 鬲 – tripod

I remember it as Japanese-like. I have experienced similar issues with synonyms/some of the meanings having changed. (~分 being one in recent memory).

You have an interesting suggestion, collecting our mistakes. I wonder if the new framework, the most recent update that has mostly annoyed most people, would make this possible.

EDIT: Also, @HotAirGun I would like to thank you for your hard work in this thread. I’ve now seen how many items you have posted and gotten updated/changed as a result of your efforts. Many thanks!

Some more:

  • 独創 – creativeness
  • 一覧 – look (all verbs requires “to” here, this fact distinguish the noun from the same verb, isn’t it?)
  • ご覧 – please look
  • 対外 – abroad
  • kanji 復 – revert
  • 一番目 – first (why “the” is required?)
  • 動かす – to move
  • 清潔 – pure
  • 怪事件 – strange event
  • 外面 – outward appearance, external appearance
  • 折角 – with great effort
  • 延ばす – to stretch
  • 自信 – self-belief

We’ve added this fix to our to-do list by the way.
