Explain いい加減

いい加減 = irresponsible, careless
いい加減しろ = Chill the fuck out.

Huh?

How does this work?

The dictionary entry for 加減 by itself shows “moderation” as one of the many definitions, and just going by that いい加減 looks like it should mean “good moderation”, which would make the common phrase いい加減しろ make sense as in “do/practice good moderation” or basically “stop being so extra”.

But いい加減 by itself meaning “irresponsible” just doesn’t seem logical. Is it just one of those things?

It has multiple connotations.

It’s kind of like 適当, which can either mean “appropriate” or “half-assed” depending on the context. It’s usually clear which one is being intended.
