Maybe the OP is under the impression that if enough people see you doing WaniKani on your laptop and ask about it, you can earn a free subscription. Like a tell-a-friend program or something.
Once I had a guy see me doing WaniKani on my phone and asked if it was Chinese. I said, “yes” and I didn’t get a free subscription so the system obviously works.

It actually is possible to earn a subscription if you win this competition but you have to know how to code and obviously, actually make something interesting enough that you’d be picked as the winner.

The first three levels are free (always). I’m sorry, but there is no way how to get a free subscription unless there is some sort of competition and/or contest where the prize is a membership. After you make it to Level 3, you have to pay. Start paying when you 100% Level 3 Radicals and Kanji so you can get your full money’s worth. WaniKani is a program that needs money to run. You can either follow what RysingDragon said; join a competition to win it, or your best bet it my opinion is to just wait for a promo code. The promo codes are really good, usually cutting one or any of the prices in half. For example, I really wanted to purchase a membership for WaniKani in December, but found that $200 for Lifetime (even though it was $100 off) was still too expensive for me. That’s when Kouichi and the WaniKani team got me (and everybody else) with a promo code that only lasted in January, where it cut any of the yearly and/or monthly prices in half. I paid about $42 for a year and since I used it, it lasts until December for me. Please just wait for a good deal. Even though I paid for a year, I will most likely stick around with the WaniKani Community for a very long time. The Crabigator will get you one day.

I once was like you (want to have a free Japanese program), but I realized that with what you get for WaniKani, the average 2,200 Kanji, the average (forgot the amount; really high xD) Vocabulary, even the community, even scripts not official that are fantastic, are greater than what you can get with an average Japanese Class. It amazes me how much WaniKani has taught me so much within just weeks which slowly becomes months. I am so glad I found Tofugu and WaniKani. What I once thougth was going to be nearly impossible, is showing to be very doable. I’ll know all this Kanji and Vocabulary before I know it. Another great part are the Radicals. Even though WaniKani does not every Kanji, you could use these radicals to create your own mmemonics with Kanji that are not in WaniKani which I find really cool! WaniKani changes these random lines to something that actually has parts that you can use to easily memorize a meaning!
