Durteloni’s Study Log

Week 19. Those travel logs are addictive, let’s log those hours as “cultural immersion”

  • Genki online: completed lesson 20. I was happy to take it slow and read about each grammar point before doing the exercises.
  • KD anki deck: this week’s cards included a few of my old WK leeches. I spent some time coming up with my own mnemonics to get through those first reviews. It was worth it  The ankiweb editor is convenient for quick editing, but it’s very basic. I’ve been cleaning the formatting occasionally on the desktop app, but I think it’s time to give back to the Anki devs and purchase the iOS app.
  • Satori: caught up with Winter. The atmosphere is not exactly cheerful, but I guess it’s fitting for that season? Started Koibito, which is branded as a thriller. As with most stories I’ve read so far on Satori, nothing much happens in the first episodes. There’s also the oddly passive female character. She stands next to the man in the train but can’t bring herself to hand him back his card holder?! Beggars belief.
  • ドラゴンボール: picked up that manga again after weeks of neglect. The kana-heavy text still mostly stumps me, but the drawings are so hilarious I don’t really care. What a hoot

Week 20. Squeezed a few moments for Japanese studies between chaotic work days and social events.

  • Genki online: just about completed lesson 21. Topics felt easier than the last one, a welcomed relief… and it’s so gratifying to nail the old kanji I learned on WK a year ago.
  • KD deck. The anki app works fine on my tablet, though it took me a while to figure out how to prevent my clumsy fingers from triggering random actions .
  • Satori: caught up with the last episode of Winter and reached ep 11 of Koibito. Still unclear why it’s called a thriller?!
  • Signed up for the Read Every Day challenge, and looking very much forward to it!

Week 21. It’s getting harder to take refuge into my little bubble of Japanese studies.

  • Genki online: did it really take me until the penultimate lesson to discover the detailed grammar notes for each lesson :person_facepalming:?! There’s a link to it from each exercise title and I missed it  Well, better later than never, and these notes will be handy to find which lessons gave me grief…. and I can try again!
  • KD deck: enjoying the app, now I know it takes me a leisurely half hour tops per day to go through my reviews, including the occasional card edits. I’ve been ruthless in failing items and this has helped with long term retention, it seems. The average is now closer to 80%.
  • Reading challenge: missed yesterday, but otherwise keeping at it daily. It’s incredibly motivating to witness everyone’s efforts!

Week 22. This was a relatively productive week.

  • Genki online: completed lesson 22, not too difficult. One more to go!
  • KD anki deck: finally managed to memorize 貨 cargo (カ), one of my WK leeches. The mnemonic to remember the ON is so simple カ like CArgo, I wish I had thought of it when I was struggling during WK reviews. It looks like I am also able to distinguish between 角 and 負.
  • Satori: finished 恋人 and decided to suspend my subscription for now as I concentrate on other reading material.
  • Started volume two ofドラゴンボール. I’m still guessing the meaning 70% of the time and Google translate is failing pretty badly. I’m longing for bilingual mangas!

Week 23. Busy week with limited time for Japanese studies. My solution: keep it varied and fun.

  • Genki online: workbooks exercises are the hardest, so limited myself to one a day. Still got halfway through the last level.
  • KD anki deck: got through the first 500 kanjis, at a very leisurely pace and while ruthlessly failing items during reviews.. For kanji that I didn’t learn on WK, the stats show that it takes me at least 20 failures to commit an item to memory. Seems fair; I had to use intensive recall sessions with KaniWani to get through the first 20 WK levels. Also, each KD card contain meaning, オン/くん and vocabulary. I mainly concentrate on meaning, オン and most common word. I thought the amount of information would be overwhelming, but it turns out to work better for me at this stage. Some laugh and groan out loud moments with outrageous mnemonics. It’s almost infuriating that it works
  • Read daily challenge: missed one day, but otherwise enjoyed reading from a variety of sources.

Week 24.

  • Genki online: finally got through the last lesson ! Next: go over my notes and review the tricky sections with my grammar book Japanese the Manga Way.
  • KD anki deck: long term recall tanked to 60% the last couple of days. It’s remarkable how stress affects my ability to remember the kanji. Anybody tried meditation before doing reviews  ?!
  • Daily reading challenge: missed a couple of days, but found some fun articles on Todaii about たぬき🦊
