Do you need to learn the mnemonics?

“Standard” Knot. Yeah okay. I don’t know what they think they know, but they just need to rename Bunny Ears to Standard. I didn’t even know there was an equivalent way, to be honest.

And then there’s this guy

Ok, I was confused at first, apparently what I had thought was the “bunny ears” method was actually the “standard” one. I didn’t even know the right-side method existed. I’m feeling a bit 混乱’d

I never knew there was the bunny ear way.

I heard it referred to in English (mostly US-based) media throughout my life, but I always assumed they were making a weak analogy to make dumb-dumb kids understand. I’m calling all kids natural dumb-dumbs, not that it’s something you teach a kid that’s struggling with the concept.

But no. Actual bunny ears. It makes no sense to me. XD My (US born and raised) wife talked me through bunny ears the other day. I find it much more convoluted, personally.

Either way, it looks like I have become the dumb-dumb person. Everyone else doesn’t even seem to know now! haha

As long as nobody watches you tie them, they look the same in the end!

I learned the bunny ears first as a kid, then switched to the standard version when someone showed me that

Everybody learns differently. The mnemonics have been making it way easier for me to remember radicals and vocabulary. The newer I am to a word, the more I rely on the mnemonic, but with words I’ve been working on for a while I instantly remember the meaning and reading. I have a hard time with rote memorization, so it helps to have the visualization, esp since Japanese is such a complex language. I guess the best way to think of it is learning to climb a mountain, you have guides and marked routes, but the more experience you have the more you’re able to navigate on your own and tackle more difficult climbs. It’s extremely rewarding too.

Good luck on your journey!

Welcome. As others have said, the mnemonics are only a tool to help you, that eventually fades away.

Now, you said you are excited to begin learning Japanese? Know that learning Kanji is just one part of learning to read and write, and you need additional vocabulary to what you find on WK, grammar that you won’t find here, and practice forming your own sentences. And this doesn’t touch on speaking and listening.
Make sure your expectations about what you will learn here are reasonable.
