Descent of the Durtle into eGoooott - NOW AT B8!

Quite. It’s not even enough to say “QWERTY keyboard” these days, because there’s even several different versions of those. Here in Australia, we use UK English but US keyboards - the UK keyboard has a pound sign in place of the dollar sign, but several other punctuation symbols are also in different places. Wikipedia lists twenty-six assorted QWERTY variants.

Would it be easier just to link their activity page?: Reg Durtle and Koichi

Speaking of keyboards, as a programmer (and techie in general) I love Hacker’s Keyboard for Android. So much easier to edit on the forum, too, since it has full arrow keys, pgup, pgdn, home, end, etc.

(still need a separate Japanese keyboard, though )

We should discuss questions to ask before koichi or a-regular-durtle arrives.

(And I need to charge my tablet…)

Maybe ask if having the wrong keyboard would be detrimental to solving the puzzle.

I had problems typing in England. After a lot of just probing around the hidden keys I found Æ Ø Å, but failed to find some symbols that I was used to use.
The one I wanted to show as example is missing from my current keyboard, couldn’t find it on hidden either XD
I used the squiggly line a lot, OK?! XD

The Regular Durtle doesn’t answer direct questions, just provides “moral support”.

You can type any symbol by holding down the Alt key and typing its UTF decimal value on the number pad. For example, ± is Alt+0177

True but as we saw for B2, anything that is said could be useful…

If I can’t get it by hitting one key or holding one or two keys and hitting one key, then I nope it and google for it and copy paste =P

Q: “What kind of tea would a Durtle be inclined to drink while working on a 4-line cipher?” (Would it perhaps be url grey? Or maybe a good Japanese tea?)

Has anyone tried counting charcters from the end of the page in the book ciphers?

Not that I remember.
(though, admittedly, I skim a lot)

Hi my good friends! What are you all still doing here in B3? I used some of your brilliant deductions and already moved on to B4… like, a long time ago! I thought you’d be right there behind me, considering I barely had to make any changes at all to your hard work.

Well, I guess I’ll just hang out here and wait for you all. I can’t solve this puzzle on my own, apparently. Anyways, I hope to see all of you–my bestest friends–soon!

Koichi mentioned we were close on Jan 13th, looks like have to look back on the earlier post from back then. Were we really that close? Wow!

Edit: Still lost

Aye, is this just the ol’ “you’ve already found everything you need to know” clue, or is there also a magical idea-forming keyword hidden in there somewhere?

And does it mean the book ciphers are almost correct or that we found the solution to the four lines of code?

As far as I can tell, the only two things we were close on were:

  • 3 book cipher words (maybe only 2, if one was a red herring)
  • (maybe) 3 out of 4 of the numbered lines matching the lengths of URLs, and Q lining up with -.

Of those two, I can only see how maybe the book cipher needs “barely any changes” to uncover something that we missed or got wrong.

I double-checked all of the isbn/page/character numbers in the wiki against the html comments (they were correct)

  • Maybe we have a wrong version of a book in the page images in the wiki?
  • Maybe we started from the wrong point in one of the pages?
  • Maybe spaces need to be included in some of the book ciphers (though I tried that on at least half of them)
  • What else might need changing??

We absolutely don’t have the solution to the four codes. We may have gotten to the next step, but the solution is still important.

Think we just need to sit down and summarise everything between this post and this post

So you’re happy to benefit from all our work but don’t want to help us through? And you call yourself a friend?

lol.
We should change the thread title to something with “poll” in it, then we’ll get another 500 in no time. Maybe koichi will feel more generous than a-regular-durtle.
